Intro to Kubricks "The Shining"

Doing a search indicates the music accompanying the intro sequence where Jack drives up for his interview at the Outlook hotel is by Bartok, possibly "Music for strings percussion and celesta".

Could anyone confirm if this is correct and if so recommend a good version to buy (I dont know if the soundtrack is available and experience indicates them to be somewhat suspect versions)

If you're after a great performance of Bartok's Music for Strings Percussion and Celesta, try Reiner's incandescent account from the late 50's performed by the CSO and recorded by RCA. I'm not sure on the availability of the Living Stereo series CDs although the vinyl should still be widely available on Classic records. Also may be available on JVCs XRCD range...

Solti's account from the 60's on Decca is also a corker and should be widely available on CD.

Yes it is Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste (first movement I think).

The Reiner/Living Stereo recording is superb. Boulez will be conducting a performance at the Barbican on Wednesday (?) next week.

Kubrick's use of music was groundbreaking and much missed. Can't remember the last film I saw with really effective use of it - tends to be either low level mood-music or over the top sentimental tat when the film reaches that "Spielberg moment" at the end, as most seem to these days.

Well, you learn something new every day; I had no idea Carl Reiner was also a conductor. I love his work with Sid Caesar, Dick Van Dyke, and Mel Brooks.
