Lila Downs. This is beautiful, gutwrenching, lyrical, sexy and engaged music. Beautiful arrangements and recording. Most of it is sung in spanish.

Peter:

Thanks for the tip...always looking for music that speaks the unspeakable (and I mean that in the positive). Speaking of which...do you speak Spanish? Does it matter in this case?

This reminds me of an old favorite Cesaria Evora "ceseria" from Cape Verde.

Have a listen

I listened to this disc sunday, I've had it about two years, and it remeinded me of Woody Guthrie. At the same time she's a gloriously sensual singer, more so, say, than Lucinda Williams. It helps if you can understand spanish, but it's not essential because there are translations of the lyrics along with the lyrics she is singing. My actual level of spoken spanish is enough to get me a couple of beers and a sandwich.

I've listened to this one:

But ultimately find it mechanic, workmanlike, undeniably very well done, but that last ounce of life that makes for exceptional is just not there. I havene't been tempted to try Cesaria since.

Peter,

I also tried her other discs but I always go back to her "Cesaria" disc. Try it I think it is something very special.

Picked up this at the same time as I got my copy of the Lila Downs CD. Haven't listened to it yet though.
