Reggaeton

I've been a huge reggae fan feels like forever. I like every type of reggae, be it ska, rock steady, roots, dub, rasta music, churchical chants, dancehall, ragga. Ok not hugely keen on ragga and lovers rock is a bit blah. But really I don't get reggaeton. It's not the fact that it's not Jamaican because I like Sonny Okosuns and Lucky Dube who are both African and Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus - aren't they American. Anyway, reggaeton, I just don't get it. It's huge in New York and Miami but I can't get a fix on it.It's disposable but disposable pop can be great. Does anyone know of any decent stuff because I've listened to loads and I would love to find something to like in it.

But that's rock steady - a million miles away from reggaeton. You would be pushed to find two types of reggae further apart.
That Trojan set is a great record by the way

Opps! Moral always read the thread twice. OK, so lets try again!
How about Daddy Yankee (Barrio Fino is the one I have heard or Don Chezina (can't remember the album - it might come to me). Both are from Puerto Rico and I listened to them when I was looking at music from that island.

I tend to agree that it does seem disposable - guess Leicester just ain't Puerto Rico.

In case you have not found these websites - have a look here:

I finally got it. I was at a boxing match in Philadelphia on Saturday and before the bouts they had a reggaeton concert. Almost everyone in the building was hispanic and it just felt great. Later on I was driving north on 5th street in Philly (the hispanic section) in a Dodge Ram with the windows open and the radio on, playing a mix of reggaeton, cumbia and merengue and it worked perfectly. It's perfect radio and club music. It's a bit like Madonna - she sounds great on the radio but I couldn't listen to her stuff at home. It doesn't work, it's just too disposable, doesn't bear too much scrutiny. It has a purpose, which isn't careful listening, but that's ok. I find ragga very similar but I listen to Chris Goldfinger's show. It works on the radio but I can't listen to any of the stuff he plays on my system, apart from Beenie Man, some of Elephantman and Marvia Providence of course.
