Donald Fagen / CDX2

Posted by: Major-Tom on 24 March 2007

Hi all. My CDX2 has never refused to play any of the discs in my collection, that is until I tried to play Donald Fagen's 'Nightfly@ CD this afternoon. The player makes strange grinding noises & says 'err' when I press play. The disc has played faullessly on all my previous players. Has anyone else encountered this problem with The Nightfly' ?

I have the same cd & the same player, but not had the same problem. I guess its possible that your cd came from a different press than mine.
Have you tried pinching out the rubbers on the bottom of your puck & re-trying the same cd? Just a thought.

Hi Matt......Well blow me !! I did as you suggested & voila It plays, (albeit a bit reluctantly, with a bit of noise when the drawer is closed ) As I said this is the first time the CDX2 has complained.

MT,

Some CDs are a tad thinner than others in the 'puck contact' area. It is in the quirky nature of Naim CD players to sometimes have problems with these discs.

It is also possible to rotate puck rubbers to raise their profile amd effectiveness.

And it's well worth getting a new one periodically.

Good listening.

The easiest thing to do is to actually put a little bit of sellotape over the centre disc section as Warners issued discs with a slightly recessed section. Do that and it will play every time.

The latest CDX2 comes with Puck 5, I believe, which does not have rubber feet. It grips tightly to the CD and I have had no problems with it, unlike my old puck with CD3.

Thanks for the input everyone. As I said the rubber tweaking seems to have done the trick. If the problem occurs on other discs in the future, I'll try a puck 5. Interestingly, I've previously had (traditional drawer loading)players from Arcam & Ayre amongst others which refused to play several discs which the CDX2 has no problem with.
