Mains Cables

Posted by: Jean-Marc on 24 November 2002

Following the recent threads concerning fuses and Mains optimization, I wanted to share one of my experimentation. Simple, easy to do and
respectful of all safety issues.

I noticed that the Naim supplied Mains cable were of relatively small gauge (1.5mm2 or 2.5 mm2 max). So why install dedicated spur(s) of higher gauge and still have a bottleneck at the end?

So I went to the local DIY store, buy 3x4mm2 Mains cables (standard and very cheap 3 Euros/m) and relevant plugs, and built me 3 "new" mains cables. (remark that you could also use 3x6mm2 cables, but they are very difficult to fit into the plugs)

I connect this to my CDSII/XPS (still burning in), HiCap and 180.
I also take the opportunity to rewire the 6 way plug, the one sold by Naim Germany which is endorsed by Naim Audio (?) and which have only 1.5mm2 cables fitted.

Results?
Well, bass goes deeper, treble are more refined, everything is more defined.
The most notable enhancement is with the dynamics. The system swings!
Drums for example hit very hard and even with my LS3/5 speaker, if I raise the volume a bit, I can feel the bass drums physically (to some extent as
the 3/5s do what they can in this field!).

I think this question of Naim Mains cable have aldready been discussed on this forum, but it would interesting to know what people are using,
what they have tried and what are everyone opinions/experimentations on the subject.

My 3 DIY cables cost me around 20 Euros (20 USD/13 GBP) so it is not a money issue.

Thanks for your comments

I am using a DIY hydra with 3x4mm2 flexible mains cable. Sounds OK to me, better then the naims cable with high quality distribution block. Right pain getting the cable into the IEC plugs though!

I've tried Belden, Aural Symphonics, Synergistic Research, XLO, Audioquest, etc. and none beats the thin stock power cable ... the rest just slow the system down, in my experience ... normal thin computer power cords work fine though, but only used in emergencies ...

All O.E.M. power cord are not the same, Naim has Copper at the IEC end ( the end that meets the amp or power sup.) check to make sure you have a real Naim A/C cord..... the fuse will tell you the max of the draw of the amp if the fuse is 5amp that is the max the amp can draw and I don't see how a thicker mains cable could help. but then again Naims copper ends seem better them the brass ones from other products . the imp. of the mains could do something if it was lowered.....I guess we will all be playing aroud tonight......funny how things work....having a higher amp a/c line would lower A/C noise and then the Amp would not be trying to reproduce it and that could give you a lower noise floor

I'm posting a link to an old thread, with some interesting cord suggestions of Richard van Laar's - who apperently is too busy keeping his infant son away from his Sonus Fabers to post. wink
