Angela Hewitt - Complete Bach Keyboard Recordings

Posted by: droodzilla on 14 September 2010

Just a heads up, as I know there are a few admirers of Hewitt's Bach on the board:

Hewitt - Bach Box Set

It includes the 2008 recording of WTC.

Hard to go wrong for £51.

Droo, Thanks for this heads up!

This does look an excellent value for money box-set from the fine hyperion CD label which suits me very well because i do confess to not having anything at all by Angela Hewitt (a situation that needs addressing) although i have a large truck load of Bach's organ and harpsichord musik by lots of other good various clavierists i have very little Bach/piano of any format in my collection.

Just to save a few more quid i've ordered via amazon (from other sellers) ...at the total cost of £46.55 to include delivery to UK.

I'm really look forward to playing them! : )

Droo,

Thanks. Unfortunately, it is not going to work for me since I already have six individual Bach discs of hers.

Hewitt is well known for her Bach recordings but I would like to mention her French music discs (Ravel, Rameau, Couperin, Messiaen & Chabrier) which are all delightful and exquisitely played.

I only have her Goldbergs and her first recording of WTC, so this is a no-brainer for me. I'm especially eager to hear the later WTC recording, which uses the Fazioli piano that so impressed me when I saw her in concert.

I can see how her approach would suit the French reprtoire you mention, and will investigate further.

Debs - I think Hewitt is as good as Bach gets on the piano, and find myself coming back to her Goldbergs often (Murray Perahia's set comes a close second). Some of the more hysterical Amazon reviews (usually from Gould disciples) dismiss her playing as merely pretty. I prefer to call it supremely lucid, with the various lines demarcated even more cleanly than they are in most harpsichord recordings. When Bach's music is presented with such clarity and intelligence, it simply speaks for itself.
