System Picture

As I promised a couple of months ago, here is a photo of my system. Had to try and fit everything in as it was the last on the film.

Didn't quite turn out as I hoped, and had to try and do some processing. Originally the electronics was just a mass of black, enhancing caused a graininess to appear. Despite using a poor camera and scanner, at least it gives you a general layout of the system.

On the rack:

<----Linn Mimik--->
-------------------------
--------------<-Hi-Cap->
<-NAC72-><-NAP110->
-------------------------

I found this layout to sound the best (??), even when moving the Mimik to the rack around the corner and the 72 onto the top shelf.

On the rack around the corner is a Linn Basik turntable - keeping it nicely away from loudspeaker vibrations.

This surprises me as I have found a really big benefit by moving my 32.5 as far away from my Hicap and power amp as I can get it. When in the proximity of a large PSU it sounds shut in and compressed compared to being where it is now.

My Mana 5 tier rack is stacked:

32.5 / Sony Walkman pro.
Marantz CD17KI
Quad FM3
Hicap
250

My P9 has its own Mana Reference table, the P9 PSU currently sits on the floor beneath it.

Tony,

I think there's a complex set of mechanisms interacting here. The stand around the corner (which I experimented with placing the Mimik on the bottom shelf) is a bolt-together sound-org. The Mimik seems to respond much better with the fully welded one you see in the picture.

In the configuration you see here, the sound is much more solid and re-assured. Also, I think that the pre-amp being on the diagonal to the Hi-Cap renders it less susceptable to electromagnetic fields (rather than being directly above or to the side).

Andrew,

Nice picture! How do you provide the link ?

I have two pictures of LP storage sitting in 'Publisher' which I would like to post in the thread covering LP Storage.

If you provide the details, more of us could illustrate our systems.

Cheers

...is the Walkman Pro a tape player/recorder, a CD player, or something else?

Just curious.

When writing a message, underneath the smilie section is an "options" section, tick the "Post Attachment" check-box. When posting the message, you can then upload your picture.

The Walkman pro is a cassette recorder. Its been around for years. They used to be compared against certain Nakamichi machines for sound quality (i.e. very good), and apparently it is possible to power it from a modified SNAPS for even better sound. From my perspective it is good to have a decent tape player that does not occupy much space.

Andrew no wonder you have difficulty with the idea that an 82 is better than a 72, if the setup of your hifi is anything to go by.

Actually, the 82 vs 72 was heard at the dealers.

You will be glad to know that the system sounds ****ing fantastic. The only reservations I have are the coiling of the left speaker cable (I hate the idea of folding and stressing the cable) and the back wall needs to be denser.

Even so, the timing and the fullness/communicability of the music is amazing. Your preamp with a Hi-Cap through Katans (at the demo) may sound sweeter, but mine sounds fuller and better value.
