Wanted: Your 10 favorite guitarists any genre......
Posted by: Rich Jerskey on 13 November 2003
Who are your ten favorite/best/most-influential, etc..guitarists of all time. The Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists list is a ridiculous joke. I'd like to see what serious music lovers (like those on the Naim Forum)consider to be their top 10 guitarists of any genre.
Note: if this thread takes off, I will compile a list reflecting overall top 10 from time to time so we can see how things look. Thanks in advance for your usual participation.

These are all from the Rock Genre, 'cos that's what I like.
Favourite is
Brian May - Very distinctive and a Unique sound.
Closely followed by
Richie Blackmore
Dave Gilmour.
Behind these three I would have (in no particular order)
Peter Green
Jeff Beck
Jimmi Hendrix
Jimmi Page
Richard Thompson
John Squire
Dave Murray
These are of course my Favorite Guitarists, those that move me, that I enjoy listening to etc. If you asked who I thought was most influential or technically gifted then I would have a different list.

This is surprisingly hard. I started writing a list and got to 20 without any effort, so, on the proviso that I can add or delete at a later stage, my initial top 10 are:
Eric Johnson
Jimi Hendrix - of course
Jerry Douglas
Michael Hedges
Stevie Vai
Robben Ford
Sonny Landreth
Albert King
Jeff Beck
Stevie Ray Vaughan

Garcia and McLaughlin should've been on the list already IMO
Lots of others haven't made an appearance yet. What about Duane Allman, Buddy Guy, Earl Hooker, John Cippolina, etc., etc.?

This hardly makes him a crap guitarist, a prat maybe, but still a superb guitarist. I think there's plenty of occasions where other guitarists have gone somewhat overboard (Page/Hendrix anyone), doesn't mean they aren't good though.
Listen to any Early Queen and then tell me he doesn't deserve to be on this list.

It's a male thing - we like having order in our lives. and lists of things help with that.

One good thing about music lists is after writing your list it energises you to go pull out the artist referenced and listen to them again.
The ultimate pleasure is in sitting back in front of the black boxes and nodding your head in confirmation along with comments'like "Ahy, that lad can play a bit I new Ï were right
