Annoying television channel logos
Posted by: gone on 08 December 2008
Am I the only one being irritated by the broadcasters always putting their logos at the top left of the picture? I was particularly annoyed when watching one of Andrew Graham Dixon's excellent Travels with Vasari series, and while we are being told about various beautiful masterpieces, we have to be reminded constantly that we are watching BBC Four (or whatever).
And the other thing that winds me up is the way we have to be told, around 2 minutes before the end of a program, what is coming up next. I can understand that commercial channels want to keep us watching, rather than switching off during the commercial break, but I don't need to be told what is going to be happening on Eastenders just as a suspense drama is reaching its climax.
I think this started on commercial TV (Sky?) but why do the BBC always feel they have to follow the commercial crowd?
Rant over
Cheers

I only have terrestrial so far, no Freeview, so only 5 channels, thank God. You're right though - I would be very annoyed indeed if the BBC started advertising future programming during a current programme. That would definitely have me back on the complaints page! Indeed, why don't you go there and complain about it? Here's the page:

It is an interesting pount as static logo's burn the screen with modern plasmas - if this happens, and it is a known problem, could the broadcaster be sued ? ( OK I know that they have to be static for 24/48 hours but you do get my point, although I understand it happens a lot in pubs that have sports channels on much of the time )
I hope so as I really do not like having logos when I am trying to watch TV

I too hate these logos, if i am watching a particular channel i dont need to be reminded which one i am watching because i already know!!
Barrie - good point regarding the burning of screens, has this actually happened to any forum members yet i wonder?

The Logos or DOGS do help protect copyright or indicate a program obtained from a transmission rather than from a released DVD.

My 2 cents as a TV worker ...
DOGs/logos are also used because market research indicates most viewers don't know what channel they watched programme X on. The BBC DOGs are designed not to cause any damage, whatever type your TV set. Viewing figures override all sense for broadcasters IME. The pointer(s) in closing the credits are minimise viewers changing channels.

I'm with you Nero. I know what channel I'm watching, I don't need reminding.
Presumably TV folk think we're like those people who drive round in a Ford Escort with "FORD ESCORT" written in big letters down the side to remind them what car they're in.
