2009 Horslips Remasters

Posted by: Sloop John B on 21 October 2009

Great news 3 Horlsips albums available again with bonus live tracks.

The Tain

The Book of Invasions

The Man who Built America

It's the excellent 2001 Abbey Road remasters with new bonus tracks.

My own favourite has always been "The Book of Invasions" with its 3 movements and recurring themes.

I listened to it again last night in full - twice - and it's not just nostalgia on my part.

With packaging better than "The Beatles" recent stereo remasters this is an absolute must.

allow me cog from a review

quote:
they show their amazing musicianship off even more, with Charles O'Connor's fiddle and mandolin swapping riffs with Johnny Fean's scything lead guitar and Jim Lockhart's flute, whistle, pipes and keyboards. The vocals of bassist Barry Devlin and drumming of Eamonn Carr have improved beyond recognition from their first album. Fean also contributes some of the best rhythm guitar licks on any album. Sword of Light is another classic in the broad style of Dearg Doom and there are no fillers or low spots. The Rocks Remain is a beautiful song, Trouble with a Capital T and The Power and the Glory are powerful anthemic songs and the whole second side is simply magical. This is Celtic Rock at its best. It isn't really true prog rock: it's too traditional and actually far, far better than all but the very best in the prog rock field. It is also one of only 3 concept albums which really work, along with their own The Tain and Camel's wonderful Snow Goose. If you haven't got this album, you really are missing out - big time. It really deserves 6 stars.

If there is only one reissue you get this year.....................

Great, thanks for the info. I loved these albums as a teenager and student, and they still get a spin. You have added to my my Amazon bill!

What do you think of the remasters?

To my ears The Tain is a great job, clean and dynamic without being overdone but BOI is a bit more subtle without quite the lift I'd hoped for. Some tracks better than others.
