Boris Godunov. Which Recordings?

I recently picked up Jerzy Semkow's (who?) 1976 recording of this wonderful opera on the cheap. After listening to it, I am definitely interested in finding a better recording of the work. It's not that this performance is terrible - it's quite good - it's just that I know better must be out there.

I think the problem with this recording - which was marketed as the world premiere of the original version - is that it is in fact a recording of the second versions (1874) with some of the orignal version (1868) thrown in. It thus tips the time-scale at about 220 minutes. Not too surprisingly, there are some slow spots. But at its considerable best, this opera delivers some of the finest stage music yet penned.

So any other recordings to consider? I've eyeballed Abbado's recording of the second version and Gergiev's enterprising set of both versions, but are they worth it? And are there any other Russian conductors out there with something to say? I will write that I will not consider the Rimsky-Korsakov-mutilated version. That was my first introduction to this piece, and as a composer I don't think Nicolai worthy to mop up the drunkard's drool. No, I must have the original version(s).

the Real McCoy

I'd recommend the Gerviev recording with the Kirov Opera. I do not have the recording, admittedly, but I've seen the performance (with all the old Petersburg glitter) and this is the real McCoy.

I'm not as much into Gergiev as I used to be, but basically his Russian opera is fabulous and / or revelatory. Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame, Prokofiev War & Peace, and the way he made Philips record all those other operas: a unique event in history.

His Kirov ballet recordings are good (I suspect he never ever actually conducts a Kirov ballet night; there's a second and a third conductor who do this). So his Nutcracker is very good, his Sleeping Beauty is way behind Pletnev's.

Gergiev accompanying soloists can be real exciting (Prokofiev piano concertos), especially when the soloist is a drinking buddy of his. His symphonic recordings are mediocre. (His Tchaikovsky five and six, and his Shostakovich 8 are really awful.)

(Thanks for your mail)
