Suggestions for 37inch TV

Posted by: ink04 on 26 January 2010

I am looking to buy a new TV to replace my old CRT.

The room containing my hi fi and 5.1 home theatre setup is an approximate size of
6.5M Long x 2.8 M Wide

Viewing position approximately 3M away from screen.

I have a budget of approximately £500. Which TV's should I consider at around this price range?

Panasonic's 37" plasma is very good. We paid £495 for ours.

Another vote for the Panny, I think it's the only plasma at that size now.

If your sources are standard definition, then stick with the Panasonic Plasma. If you are likely to want to use HD source and you want a 1080p screen to pixel match the source, then you will probably have to go down the LCD route for a 1080p screen as plasmas only tend to start 1080p at 42". My personal recommendation would be the Panny for 37" SD, but for HD I'd go up to 42" for a 1080p plasma. LCD is not so great, especially for fats moving sport and movies. It can be a very personal thing though so best to demo and if possible borrow for an in house demo if from a nice local independant store.

Such as darts and sumo?

While not being 1080, the Panasonic gives an extraordinarily good picture from bluray. I really don't like LCDs, wanted a 37" plasma, and had a choice of 1!! Luckily it's very good, and great value too.

Thanks for the replies so far, really useful as this is the first time for me to invest in really good tv.

I guess plasma would be the better option. A 42inch would be too large for the room and would probably be outside my budget.

However, how future proof is the Panasonic 37inch, would it be able to adequately handle HD

I use mine with a Panasonic bluray and the picture is great. The future in the world of TV seems to be about two weeks, so who knows how future proof anything really is?

Which model number is this?

It's the TX-P37x10B. It's even cheaper now; Amazon have it for £465, which is an amazing bargain.

We've just been going through the same exercise. We have a lovely Toshiba 32" Picture View/Frame CRT (nearly 7 years old) but want to join the 21st Century ...

Our Naim salesman certainly promoted the 37" Panasonic X10 and we were very tempted, especially at the price. But the fact that it's not 1080p Full HD worried me so we looked around.

Having been diverted by the Samsung 40" LED - it looks great with a BD feed - the shop salesman told us to think again.

After much umming and arring, we've opted for the 42" Panasonic V10 ... probably far too big for the room but we felt that LCDs are a step down from the Toshiba CRT.

It's due to arrive mid-march but the stand we've ordered will be another two-three weeks so it looks like I shall have to wait a while to audition it.

So many models, so much choice ... why can't it be simple like hi-fi!

remember when TVs came in big cabinets with closing doors and about 2 sizes at most? It was a step up from B&W but we had friends in the 60s that had "remotes" to change the channel. OMG!

Having had a panny 37 a sony 46 x series and now a Loewe the only choice is the later and do not go with the picture you see in the shop. I have freesat hd built into my tv and a hard drive and the picture well thats a whole another story.
