No CD Present (HDX)
Posted by: intouch1 on 21 October 2010
my HDX SSD is giving me a very hard time in reading CD's.
i've had the unit for approx. 10 days and when feeding it CD's to rip to my NAS it will only read about 50% of what it's fed. the other half it says no CD present. no matter if newer or older pressings. scratched or mint. just random.
it's firmware 1.5a SP1.
i also have a harddisk HDX that reads all CD's perfectly with no issues.
Naim seem to have adopted a new drive. the one in the SSD is black while the one in the Harddisk version is white.
SSD version is totally quiet but useless while the HDD unit is noisy as hell but faultless in reading ALL CD's...
anyone else have such issues ??

Hi,
Do I understand you correct that you have two HDX's??
I've once had problems with the CD tray of my HDX. Solved by replacement of the drive mechanism.
Perhaps you should contact your dealer for assistance.
Regards,
Michel

yup...have 2.
HDD version reads and rips everything, never SSD version by now only reads a third of what it's fed....a real PITA....

HDX players do strange things and after my second HDX showed a weird behaviour with playlists I gave it back and bought a CDX2-2... I am astonished to read that the HDX still seems to have some problems... Naim should finally fix all software and hardware problems and offer a 100% working HDX instead of producing more and more new streaming players and servers!

I have noticed the following with my Serve SSD which may (or may not) be relevant to your HDX issue.
Do you monitor the memory available on the SSD (via the Desktop client) whilst you rip? As far as I can see the ripping software has a buffer of about 2,800 Mb - as you rip this memory is taken up by each ripped CD (c 700Mb) and then as the album is transfered to the NAS/HD, the memory is freed up. Most albums seem to get transferred fairly rapidly off the buffer but, very occasionally, if I was a bit too enthusiastic with my ripping and didn't allow enough time between CDs (or if I ripped an obscure album that the on-line database didn't recognise straightaway) the buffer would become filled with two or three CDs. Once there was less than 1,000Mb ripping memory available, the Serve would immediately eject any subsequent CD without ripping with the "CD not present" message appearing. By waiting for the albums to clear from the buffer to the NAS/HD I could then resume ripping.
I have now ripped 820 CDs without any major problems - all but two were recognised by the on-line databases, about 20 needed the album cover artwork manually adding (all 20+ years old) and I have had no ripping errors reported - a fairly painless process overall and am loving the new ease of access to all the music.
This may not be relevant to your problem but may be worth checking??

Nick, I had that issue too that it would say less than 1000Mb available and would eject the CD. however, that was a different issue than the unit not recognizing the CD's at all in the first place.
I guess the drive is not one of the best out there.
When exiting the CD from the HDX on ripping it with Roxio (WAV) it would read the CD on the fly....

intouch1 - how long are you leaving the CD in the drive before taking them out? I have had 2 new HDX-SSDs within the last month (long story) and both sometimes took a good 30 seconds or even a little more for the display to change from 'no CD present'.
Secondly, can I ask what issues you were having RE <1000 MB left in memory and the disc not ripping? Sounds similar to an intractable issue I am having help from Naim with at the moment.

billy, i sometimes leave the cd in the tray for a good 5-7 minutes with nothing happening. open and close drawer again and wait for several minutes and still the same. so i guess the laser pickup of thze drive might be inferior to the white drive in my HDD version of the HDX.
as for < 1000Mb, this happened a few days ago. when trying to rip it would tell me that there is not enough space on my drive while i still have a good 1.5 TB available.
at first i thought there might be some limitation to folder size set, which was not the case.
on the naim ps interface, i found a message that there is below <1000Mb available, so i gathered it hase something to do with buffer overrun of the HDX SSD or something.
reset the machine over night as well as my network and then all was fine again.

intouch1 - the "<1000MB" issue happens whenever the HDX is unable to send the ripped CD files to the NAS - for whatever reason (and there can be many). Are you sure that, after resetting your HDX and network, the last few CDs you ripped did actually reach your NAS? (I am having help for a similar issue which is occurring quite frequently.)
Also, what type of NAS are you using? Is it a wired or wireless network?
Finally, your experience with the failure of CD recognition is different to mine. Whilst I have had perhaps 5 or 6 discs out of 230 which have not been recognized, for the other the HDX seems to identify the presence of CDs within 20 or so seconds...
Perhaps you need dealer help.
