Jim Magilton's Blue & White Army
Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 05 June 2006
Please see Royle leaves town for full context.
Jim Magilton couldn't hide his delight at being named as Town boss and immediately targeted a return to the Premiership as his aim. The 37-year-old becomes the youngest manager in the Championship and will be joined by Bryan Klug as his first-team coach.
This Club means the world to me and when I walked off the pitch after the Derby game in what I thought would be my final appearance as a player here, I always had the feeling that I would be back sometime. It comes quicker than I expected obviously but I am not intimidated in anyway about the job. I embrace it although I am under no illusions about the task ahead. Ever since I started in the game I have had the utmost belief that I have all the credentials needed to be a manager and I know I have the support of everyone at Ipswich Town. If you have that backing and are united as one, then the purpose can only be to provide success on the pitch. The Premiership is the goal, it has to be the goal and when you look around the place, it is a Premiership club in all but status. It's our job to provide that status. It's obviously a very proud day for me, to be announced as manager of such a wonderful club and I'm fired up for the job. I and can't wait to get going with the players. Bryan's the same. We will hit the ground running come the first day of pre-season, you can be sure of that.

I agree, though, not the budgies. I still hold a grudge from 1976!

Another battling performance and we're through - we were definitely better than the Swans throughout and thoroughly deserved our victory. Didn't understand why Swans' best player was on the bench for the first our hour, but although he was a threat when he came on, I don't think he would have changed the outcome.
The ref did well to spot the penalty, there was quite a lot of shirt pulling and holding in box by Swans' defenders and he got it absolutely right. Another good penalty from Alan Lee.
Best player on the pitch was Jamie Peters. Nice to see Luis Castro Sito back in the team, he looked good. Sylvain Legwinski continues to look classy.
So who's next (as Tom Lehrer once said).

Yet another new signing - Jon Waters from Chester: a 23-year old striker to go with Clarke, Haynes, Lee and Macken.

Away at the Hornets eh - well, we've got every chance. Watford, isn't that quite near Wembley?

An away point at the Britannia and Jon Walters nearly scored on debut - can't complain because Stoke were riding high. The account says we had most of the game and Stoke didn't have a shot on target. Still it is mid-table mediocrity for us this season and our best chance of making anything happen this year is the FA Cup.

We'd kill for that!

Oh well - good possession, good passing, rotten finishing - result lost to 10-man Palace.
Still as I understand it - we're concentrating on the cup

We're still concentrating on the cup.
We weren't dreadful and made a few chances, but defences errors let us down and the Foxes stole the points. Jamie Peters was impressive, but we missed Roberts and Lee. Owen Garvan's tackle was plain stupid and he had to go. Hopefully he'll learn that's not how to play the game - discipline is vital.
I hope we're on top form next week.

Why is it teams go up to the Premiership have a great season and qualify for Europe and then the season after strengthen the squad and then struggle with relegation.
Still Scotty, I wouldn't give up on it yet; remember what Harry R did at Pompey. Tell Curbishley to put Mark Noble in the team and go for it - all out attacking football is the only way to survive and will ensure everybody gets behind the team.

i personally think its too late. they have the dreaded defeated look before they even kick a ball. the confidence is completely shot!
cant understand whats gone wrong. the fans were chanting...."your not fit to wear the shirt"
and to be honest i dont blame them.
charlton away next - now lose that and its all over. period!

Another great result
AICE: Ipswich Town Reserves 1-0 Luton Reserves
Whoops, things have got bad when we have to celebrate these small crumbs of comfort.

Mark - I still think you'll be there. You play much better football than Leeds for example.

Well met gentlemen!
Not being a visitor to the Cell that often, it was pure coincidence that this thread was highlighted at the forum entry screen. Ah the glory and majesty that is the mighty Town, those happy days at Portman Road....
As James might have guessed from our earlier corespondence on the glories of East Anglia, I'm also an Ipswich Town fan, albeit some 12,000kms away. I was lucky enough though to see the Suffolk Punch play when I was in England in September last year. I was staying at Richmond so it was a three hour trip across London and Essex. The ground was glorious, as good as my last visit in 96, the sun was shining, they had my size shirt in the supporters shop, I had a good seat in the Green King Stand, all was set for a marvellous afternoon's entertainment. And then we played West Brom at home....
Needless to say in the pub after the game, whilst drinking a few of the aforementioned Greene Kings I wasn't as ebullient as previously. Worse, when I finally trudged back to Richmond around 12ish my partner already knew the score and greeted me with a "Pretty crap team there!" I swear that was grounds for divorce right there and then!
Still as long as we beat the Budgies and get promted to our rightful division, all is right with the world!
yours in Blue,
Giles

As everybody knows I never say anything bad about referees and I'm not going to break that tradition for a referee as inept and totally useless as Mr Bennett.
We outplayed Watford for 85 minutes - hit the bar twice, forced some excellent saves from their keeper and scored a perfectly good goal. However, even with the spirit we showed it was not possible for our 10-men to hold out against the 12 men of Watford. I'm sorry but we was robbed.
Now I'm the first to condemn an Ipswich Town player ejected from the game, but the dismissal George O'Callaghan was ludicrous: one of the worst decisions I have seen in 46 years of watching football. George was clattered by the Watford player and simply made an effort to get up as quickly as he could and unbelievably he was sent off. Surely the FA will examine Mr Bennett's conduct and save other teams from having to endure this man. I would hope George does not get a ban - an apology would be more appropriate.
No criticism of Watford from me - they are a nice club; they are just very very lucky to be in the FA Cup quarter-finals and. in fairness to Ade Boothroyd, admitted as much.
Danny Haynes was clearly on-side when the shot came in from Dan Harding plus it took it deflection from a Watford player. Danny was just quickest to react. It should have been a goal.
Smith looked offside to me when he received the ball to set-up their goal.
The fact that we outplayed a premiership team, despite the uneven odds, is at least some comfort. If we can play like this for the rest of the season surely we'll pick up some points in the Championship: provided, of course, we don't get Mr Bennett as referee again. Shades of Clive Thomas I think.
I really thought this was our year - only goes to show how wrong you can be.
Good luck to Watford in the quarter finals all the same - but personally, I'd like to see Plymouth win it.

Nice to hear from you.
Lets hope we can salvage something from the season - I think Jim's doing a great job with virtually no money available. We'll get better.
All the best, Rotf

Nice picture James - BTW that's me in the corner behind the goal.
I thought as the last team to win at Wembley (superb play-off final against the Tykes) that we were going to be the first at the new Wembley - however, it wasn't to be.

Dear all,
thanks for the warm welcome to this small corner of the forum that will forever be Ipswich Town.
Yes, we was robbed, mugged actually by a man in black!
We'll still have a chance - after all it is an Australian company building it, so completion by May is by no means guaranteed!
Bluely yours,
Giles

Well I couldn't get there tonight to join the 20,000+ who saw us fall deeper in to trouble as we lost to Wolves - surely we should expect to beat teams like Wolves. 22 shots at goal according to the match stats and we still couldn't score - they apparently had 5 and one sneaked in. Only 7 points between us and the drop - we really aren't that bad, but the table tells its own story.
Some good news is the FA have over-ruled Steve Bennett regarding Saturday's cup match - George O'Callaghan should not have been sent off, not even booked. It was just plain awful refereeing, but it cost us a place in the quarter-finals and possibly the ultimate. I hope Steve Bennett never referees another Town match; hopefully the FA will suspend him from further matches this season.
