Albinoni's Adagio - help !

Posted by: Claus on 31 March 2005

Hello,

I'm trying to find a particular recording of this piece.

Some 20 years ago I heard it for the first time on the radio and by coincidence recorded it on my cassette deck. Fortunately, because it became a real favourite of mine. Unfortunately I can no longer find the tape.... :-(

So I would really want to find exactly that recording again. Why just that one? Well, it's a little different to the usual recordings.

In this particular recording the organ plays a larger role than usual. Some parts which are normally played by cello or strings are here played by the organ - and I really do like that, compared to the standard.

The only other info I have is that it did not sound like a new recording at the time, so will probably be somewhat more than 20 years old now. Also, i remember that you could easily hear the air coming from the organ pipes, on some parts at least.

I have listened to lots of different recordings but never managed to find "my" version.

So, I am hoping that some (or at least one!) of you well informed music lovers can help me out on this one.

Could it be this one?

I know that this piece can sound very different depending on the system on which it is played. I wouldn't say that the organ is particularly in the foreground or background - at the end of the day it was compiled for the organ as a principle instrument.

PS - I am assuming you mean the Adagio in G minor, he wrote quite a few others as well Winker

Thanks, I will try to listen to that one.

Surely, it's the G minor I'm referring to, and I know that it's someone else (some Italian guy)who should have most credit for composing it Winker

Other suggestions still welcome, in case this is not the one I'm looking for.

This may sound daft but there was a recording of Adagio on the Rollerball OST ( the original one from c. 25 to 30 years ago ), that featured an organ part heavily.

Maybe if you can google it you might get something

Thanks Colin, but unfortunately neither yours or Huwge's suggestion match.

Just to clarify:

It's not a matter of the organ being foreground or background, but in the version I'm looking for some parts usually played by strings are played by the organ in stead.

One more detail: Having listened to quite a lot of recordings I would think it's fair to say that tempo in the one I'm looking for is about average or faster (playing time average or shorter).

Other suggestions are still welcome.....
