Planning a trip in the near future. Anyone recommend particular haunts for good live music in the city ?

off the top of my head:

small venues (500 capacity)

slims
american music hall
bimbos

medium venues (1500)

fillmore
warfield

you'll find mostly pop and alternative bands playing at these venues, occasionally jazz.
there's an avant-garde jazz club in the east bay, whose name escapes me at the
moment, but if that interest you, i'll could easyly find out its' name. if you're into
traditional jazz (e.g. josh redmond), there's kimball's in oakland. i've never
been there, but it's a 2-shows-a-night, 2-drink-minimum type of place.

i remember now, it's the stork club in oakland.
many of the rastascan (e.g. splatter trio) bands play there. i haven't seen any adverts for it lately, so i'm not sure if it's still around.

yoshi's belongs on the list, thanks rohit.

Bay Area Citysearch can help. Better is San Francisco Arts.

The SOMA is hopping with small venues. This includes the Maritime Hall and the Hotel Utah.

I also meed to mention the Last Say Saloon, the SweetWater Saloon (North of the Golden Gate in Marin), yes, Yoshi's (in Berkeley), and Freight and Salvage (also in Berkeley).

An hour away is the brilliant Palms Public Playhouse in scenic, trendy, Winters.

And I know that I've only scratched the surface. More to come when I think of them. When will you be here?

Cheers

Keith.
