Samsung LCD Compoent Video Question

At the weekend I bought myself a Samsung LE32R73, which is a 32 inch lcd HD TV.

Got it home pluged the home choice into the scart plug and the dvd into the composite plug and all was well.

Obvioulsy I wanted to try and make the most of the picture quality so yesterday I invested in a component video cable to improve the picture quality from my DVD player (Cambridge Audio DVD53)

I became quite confused as the picture appeared but with an extremly pink tinge. I tried swaping the cables around in case I had the connections muddled up, but to no avail. All other connections from the DVD to the TV worked, including s-video and composite.

Then it occured to me that the component input on the Samsung is setup for progresive scan, and my DVD does not have prog scan.

Does anyone know if this is the cause, if so I might plump for a Samsung DVDHD950, which has prog scan, and can also upsample the standard DVD to 720 or 1080 resolution (I think 720 is the native res of my new TV).

Any thoughts?

I think you will find that this is because DVD player is set to RGB and the screen/tv is set to YPbPr. Setting the screen to RGB should do the trick. If you have green tinge , then the settings are the other way round.

Hope this works.
But if you have a new HD Tv why not use HDMI for the best quality video and audio connection??

I think you may be on the right track, but i cannot change the component input on the LCD to rgb, and I cannot change the component out put on the dvd to YPbPr.

In respect of HDMI, my existing player does not have hdmi output, but even if i bought a new DVD, the cost of an 8m hdmi cable is about as much as the dvd player I am lookinf at (£120) as my dvd is on the hifi rack with the ht decoder, and the lcd is on the wall on the other side of the room.

I have read that componet is almost there in terms of quality and I already have the lead.

Just an update in case anyone is iterested.

I bought the Samsung DVDHD950 for 120 from Richer Sounds.

First of all the pink picture was it seems from the interlaced component input - progressive scan works fine now.

The HDMI connection also worked and the DVD player can upscale to 720 and 1081 (or whaterver it is) My TV manual says tht720 is the optimum res and I would agree.

Next interesting point is the fact that the HDMI input whilst rendering the colours slightly more vividly, gave a slightly more pixly picture, where as the compoinet input gave a super smoth and quite breahtaking picture, so I have stuck with progressive scan component.

I understand that the original version of this DVD player could also upscale the SD picture to HD res via the component output, but they re did the firmware to remove this option, so for DRM reasons. I might ry and get the old firmware of the web to try the upscaled component contection.
