The two OJC Remastered CD's arrived last weekend, and I had a listen.

These are two excellent, large sounding discs. The sound is big! They don't have that thin, nasal sound typical of CD. Not sure if it's because of the higher bit resolution or the remastering, but I must say this is the closest to analogue sounding of any of the jazz CD discs from that era.

Straight away you notice the improved presence and resolutiion of bass & drums. They now have the added texture and weight of real instruments, in the same room as all the others. Notes are more rounded and dynamic. For example, Philly Joe Jones hitting his Gretsch drums with calf skin heads on them. The woodiness, and percussiveness of Paul Chambers bass.

The two albums listend to were Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, and Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section. Both classic jazz albums which had always been on my list of must haves, but for some reason never made their way to my place til now. Let me just say it was worth the wait!

The Thelonious album, alone, is worth having for the tune "Ruby, My Dear". This piece evokes the smokey, gritty, romantic images of jazz life in the 50's! John Coltranes' tone throughout is amazing!

On Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, the rhythm section refers to the unit playing in the Miles Davis band for the past 18 months. Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones. This is IMHO essential jazz. Great tunes,, great playing!

These CD's definitely could be Hifi demo discs.
If you are looking for a classic jazz album, with great sound, check out these new OJC remasters. They are Excellent!
