Sainsbury XO single cru
Grande Champagne cognac it also calls itself a Premier Grand Cru.
Im familiar with the classification of cognacs.
Anyone tried this currently its got £5 off which places it just under £20.
I would say its good but Im not a cognac drinker.

Single malt seems to prevail on this forum. Hence, you haven't been deluged with replies.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the bottle from Sainsburys that you are talking about, fama.

However, I went to France and stayed in the armagnac region a couple of months ago and, of course, had to go and do some tasting.

We started out with the wine, with which I wasn't too impressed, as it was a bit acidic with very little body.

Then we went on to try the aperitif that they made from mixing the wine with the unaged armagnac. Normally I'm not a fan of aperitifs, but this was rather pleasant. Called 'Floc de Gascogne' it comes in red and white and, of course, I tried both.

Next we went on to the armagnac and started with the young stuff, aged for 7 years in oak barrels.

Very nice.

Next on to the 1984 vintage (14 years in oak). Even nicer.

Then the '77 vintage (21 years) and this was absolute heaven. I could have stayed all day just breathing in the 'aroma'. I have to say it is probably the nicest brandy I have tried.

Of course by this time I was completely sloshed and the credit card now leaped from my wallet and slapped itself on to the counter. No contest, I came home with the '77. Unfortunately, there's not much left now.

I must admit that I am a fan of the grape and although I like an occasional malt as well, my preferred spirit is brandy.

Regards, Mark

fama,
I find Hennessey XO particularly splendid.
Not cheap but arguably worth the money.

You ask for a comment on a Cognac and get a reply about an Armagnac.

Nuff said.

Enjoy your tipple. The one that suits your palate and your wallet is the best choice. Better ones are for special ocassions.

My girlfriend drinks cognac (I am the single malt type) and at the moment one of her all time favorites is a Chateau Montifaud (appelation fine petite champagne) which indeed is a very fine congnac.
Another fine cognac in her collection according to her is the Famille Estève. One she mentiones me which she unfortunately does'nt have in her collection (yet) is the Renault cognac.
