Hi all!
As i did post in "What are you listening right now" thread i have a sony classical edition of Glenn Gould J.S. Bach Goldberg Variations.
The recording is flat.
Is there somebody who knows a better recording from a different label of it?
Thanks a lot!

I really like Rosalyn Turecks interpretation, recorded 1957. It can be heard on "Rosalyn Tureck II" of the Great pianists of the 20th century series.

Have a look at his post about 7th down on this thread (he's also a big fan of the Walcha recording if you prefer the harpsichord):

I haven't got round to checking this recommendation out yet though. I'm also keen to hear Angela Hewitt's as her other Bach recordings have been rather fine.

Thanks a lot to you all!
Tomorrow morning i'll take a trip to the record shop.
I think is a shame, with all that tech around, that old good recordings can't be saved and remastered in a more proper way.
Some of them just get out of catalogues.......................

My beloved Angela Hewitt does it for me.

Ditto for me. I also have both of Gould's versions, which put me in a mood to explore other interpretations, and Andras Schiff's. I stopped exploring after buying Angela Hewitt's, and it is the only version that gets any play time lately.

Dear Gianluigi,
I enjoy the recording from Hyperion of Tatianna Nicholeaeva, and others have given you fine recomendatiuons as well. Angella Hewitt gets a good deal of credit, and rightly I would think, but I prefer TN.
I actually prefer them on the harpsichord, and there are many fine readings available, though not all the greatest are still in print at the moment. I would steer you toward Pierre Hantaii on Opus 111 [a French label], if you want a fantastic modern recording of a lovely reading on the harpsichord.
Hope that helps. All the best from Fredrik

Gianluigi,
I have six different 'Goldbergs' and by very far I prefer Ito Ema's on MA recordings. Her level of playing this piece is unmatched, on top of being one of the best piano recordings one can hear. Try her and you won't regret.

Andras Schiff's live recording for ECM is pretty special and his sleeve notes dissing harpsichords are rather amusing.

Ciao Fredrik!
Opus 111 must be a good choice as Hyperion should.
I know the two brands but both were unavaible by my dealer.
I'll surely find them on the net.
I found instead an ECM new series recording by Andras Schiff and got that for now.
Thanks a lot!

Yes.
The one i got this morning.
More light-hearted than the Sony classical recording and very heartly played.
ECM is producing very good new records, i think.
Thanks Graham!

Pierre Hantai has since made another recording of the Goldberg Variations, on the Mirare label, if memory serves. I've not heard it (or indeed ever seen it), so can't compare it to the Opus 111 recording.

On the subject of the Goldberg Variations, a recording of them is planned by a fine pianist you've probably never heard of called Katherine Durran; if any of you have any interest in hearing the unduly neglected Toccatas, I can't recommend her recording of them too strongly. It is very fine indeed, and the recorded sound is an audiophile's wet dream. Hopefully the recording of the Goldbergs will follow shortly.

Fredrik,
I have and enjoy very much TN playing Shostakovich's Piano Preludes (three discs). She was the first pianist to perform this work for him.

EW,
She really sounds great. I just ordered the CD though I already have Angella Huwitt performing this work.
Thank you,

Hi Sebastian!
Did you change the cdp?

I already have a recording of G. Gould on Sony Classical cd.
Of course LP sounds different from CD.
I love it in the first part, really.
But the recording in itself is not so good.
I saw the same on another label edition and i'll get it as well.
Thanks a lot!

Gianluigi and Sebastian,
When A State of Wonder was released, the reviewers made much of the fact that the 1981 version was remastered from the back up analog tapes. At the time of the original release, digital was the new kid on the block and everyone switched to it wholesale. It was only later that the "perfect sound forever" was found lacking. So, it was with great joy that the project producers found the back up analog tape. If you have the original Goldbergs released in the 80s, then you have the DDD version. "A State of Wonder" is worth owning if only for the analog version. On the other hand, the SACD re-issue does not use the analog tapes as source (go figure), so should be avoided for that reason. I have drifted away from Glenn Gould's "groundbreaking" interpretation of the Goldbergs, but there is no denying his considerable skill as a pianist.
