How much time?

Posted by: northpole on 02 July 2006

Recent postings with pictures have revealed that, besides wonderful sources, amps & speakers, some members have incredible collections of music on vinyl and cd.

The volume was such that I couldn't help compare to my miniscule collection which I find it difficult enough to find the time to enjoy.

This lead on to the question of how much time do we all spend listening to music in the average week. For myself I would have to admit to an average of one or two albums per day. Of course, some weekends can blow this statistic out of the water, but I'm trying to glean a more representative response. (Any response most welcome!).

I am prepared to be astounded by the more devoted of our Forum members. So please, reveal all!

Dear peter,

I am working 2-10pm currently.

Sometimes it gets light at this time of year before I can let go.

The weekend is for normal listening, and honestly I don't go too far all that often if I can help it. Usually Sunday after lunch is the best time.

I have never analysed the time spent, but it helps not having a television or DVD replay, though I would like to set the PC up for DVD again....

What I do find is that on a good week, I may miss the news for half of that week!

But I am terrible for parting with things I know that I will never have the wish to return to. That is not a comment on the quality of what I refine out, but sometimes an indication of evolving taste. I don't suppose that my library will grow in absolute terms, but I still investigate new things as far as I can considering the finanaces!

As Peter says it varies quite a lot but around 20 hrs a week between the two of us would be typical.

cheers

I work from home - my job is quite boring - so I have music playing most of the time. I probably spend about 4 hours a day just listening to music, whilst doing nothing else and 12 hours a day if you count the music while I work as well.

Less on Saturday during the season when frequent trips to the holy shrine in Portman Road take up a fair wack of time - though I've now got a CD player in the car.

It is very variable, but I normally listen to as least one or two discs a day, on a weekend it can be five or six or more (especially if I don't listen to the whole CD). And, of course, there was that day back in April when I listened to the whole Ring on Radio 3 - that was stupid though, and not really to be recommended.

Of course, when it comes to concert going, I can get even more insane - I think there may be one day this festival when I am doing 4 (there are certainly several when I am doing 3). And I do remember the mad rush across Edinburgh in 2003 to get from the finale of the Ring to the firework concert (which was difficult as the streets were far from empty of people.

Tam,

You sound like my erstwhile colleague and mad keen (amateur) cellist Chris Dent who is back living in Edinburgh. You don't know him by chance do you ??

Very variable. Between 15 and 40 hours.

My radio tends to be on for most of the daytime hours, for "background music", & I sit down & listen to an average of maybe 2 albums per day, so fairly similar to peter.

In idle moments I wonder if I was to start with the first and listen through to the last of my CDs I would in fact be setting some sort of longevity record! I suspect that I have more minutes of recorded music than I have time left to listen!
I do try to listen to 2 or 3 albums a day, though it is not unusual for me to use the remore control to skip tracks I do not care for that much! Including duplicates and albums which I purchased on a whim at some point in the distant past i need time to hear more than 3000 of the damned things.

Dear Ian,

I don't think I've had the pleasure. Actually, I've had another look and my schedule this summer is not quite so crazy as it might be (I'm only going to one morning concert and the most I've managed to get on a single day is 3 - still, when that's a Bruckner, a Beethoven and sizeable bit of Messiaen, as it is on one of those days, it's still probably too much). I'm told, incidentally that the Beethoven's aren't selling out (presumably the 5.30 start time and people's jobs getting in the way - god bless flexi-time) so, anyone who's in Edinburgh during August, even if they don't think the like Beethoven, should pick up a ticket or two.

Dear Peter,

On average I listen to 3 to 4 albums per day. To be more specific on media type I would say about 80% vinyl and 20% compact disc.
