Ittok LVii setup

Posted by: BigH47 on 12 February 2003

Whilst checking over my TT I noticed the static balance on my Ittok is high at the front. I am assumimg it should be level.
Question how do you adjust this?
Is the counter balance clamped with a grub screw?

Many thanks

No It's not clamped but is very tight.

If you are talking about the arm balancing when downforce dial is set to '0' then yes Balance should be level but if it's almost level I wouldn't worry too much. It's more important that the arm has a smooth motion as it slows down to it's balance position otherwise the bearings may be strained.

If you are talking about the angle of the arm when playing a record then this should usually be level but depending on cartridge you can get better results often by sloping up towards the cartridge end slightly, this reduces the VTA.

The ittok uses a conventional sliding counterweight. That you think it might be tightened down with a grub screw indicates only that the rubber o-rings are still tight.

Grasp the arm tube with one hand and firmly but gently twist the counterweight to and fro while pulling back on it.

When doing it, there is no avoidance of the feeling that you must be exerting enormous pressure on the bearings, and accordingly destroying them in the process. rest assured it you make a reasonable effort to be gentle, it should all work out fine.

Thanks guys. I did'nt want to try and move the counter weight if it was clamped.

I tend to put a bit of soap (washing up liquid) on the counterweight rubber b4 trying to put it on, it makes it much easier to set the balance and less likely to destroy the bearings

On my LV2 I use the counterweight to set the tracking force as well, I do not use the dial on the side, i leave this at zero. The tracking force is set using a shure stylus force gauge. I found it gave a better more open sound, even a slight difference in tracking force does this and it is better to set it by ear providing you stay within the manufacturers limits. The VTA setting is also best to set by ear as all cartridges are slightly different in their build. We are talking about slight differences in height here not large. It worked for me anyway.
