Posted by: Van the man on 23 July 2006
What would the going price be for a 2005 model cd5x?
Secondly, what is the rrp at the moment? it is now £1700 is it?
Seen one for sale at £1150.

When I bought mine in Autumn 2004 it was £1450 (or something pretty similar) so I can't imagine they're up to £1700 new now (a quick google seems to suggest £1525 is the current price) so, to be honest, I wouldn't have thought that, unless this is from dealer, ex-dem, with a full warranty, you were getting terribly good value.

People keep on recommending the Simply Stax website as a source of used price information but in my opinion it's a waste of time. It gives "reported" sale prices (exclusively eBay I believe) without any information about age, condition etc.
If you follow the link to CD5Xs, you will see that one reputedly sold for £650 in March 2006 !
At least in this case there are five other sales reported this year, but commonly the sample size is far too small to be meaningful, especially given the lack of supplementary details. "Average sale price" is frequently meaningless because of anomolies such as the one referred to above.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing .... ?
P.S. One sold on on eBay yesterday for £877 including warranty - seller is a reputable Naim dealer -

Hi
I've been looking at used prices for the cd5x all year - I'd say anything under £1000 (in a private sale not from a dealer, which would be at least £100 more) is a good price, assuming it's in mint condition.
As for the £650 cd5x, I remember it well. It was a 'buy it now' on ebay. I emailed the seller about an hour after it was listed to check it wasn't a cd5i. Within another hour it had mysteriously been 'sold', only for the same seller to relist it for about £400 more!
Not sure what would have happened if I'd clicked the buy it now at £650. Hmmm.
In any case, I think I'm gonna hold out now for a Naimnet server or Naim dac.
All the best,
Nicholas

This illustrates my point perfectly - eBay "sale" prices are not always a reliable indicator of true market value (& I'm fairly sure that these are the source of the Simply Stax data).
In my experience, eBay final prices are significantly influenced by the quality of the listing, not least because Naim "shoppers" usually know what they want & are more likely to bid on items if the seller likewise appears knowledgeable.
Nonetheless, eBay prices are a lottery. There are bargains to be had for those who keep their emotions under control (I speak from experience ) but some items fetch silly money - HiCaps in particular for some reason.
Norman (Rodborough) - I'm glad that you didn't take my previous post personally - it was intended as a general observation of course.
