Armatrading

Just pulled out my two Joan Armatrading albums, Walk Under Ladders and Me Myself I and really enjoying them again. I enjoyed her music back around 1980 and saw her once when on tour doing The Key in hte mid 80's in an outdoor amphetheater. Memories of good days and certainly lots of party in that girl. Lots of soulful writing in her lyrics too. Great ballads. I got to turn my sister on to her too.
Is she still around? I hoope doing well.

Yes she is still around and tours. I think she is a class act. An intelligent song writer/musician and excellent performer in my view. Her work was always well recorded and I feel she is under-estimated. 'Love and affection' is a great song and I always liked the live version of 'cool blue stole my heart'. Armatrading let her work stand on it's own without all the usual hyping, sex and gimmickry prevalent in the industry.

I first saw her in the mid 70's when touring with Supertramp. She stole the show.
Her music is often used to challange a system as it is well recorded and dynamic.
I have seen her since but I didn't think she was as good in the later years but still very good.
It's great to hear she is still in business!!

I've recently rediscovered JA's third (epomymous) 1976 album, which sounds pretty good as a remastered CD.
This is the one that brought her music to a substantial audience, and I can remember going to a Hi-Fi show in 1976 when every exhibitor seemed to be playing it - the gramophone record of course!
Like the eponymous Tracy Chapman album, I don't think that Joan has ever surpassed it.
John.

Hi,
Joans last album was in2003 "Lovers Speak" which i actually really like , quite dynamic sounding if slightly didital.
Also brought out DVD sdisc set last year "All the way from America" DVD CD set.
Perhaps for hardened followers only.

She's just great, heartfelt and fun. I'm glad there are others that like her too.

Looks like we've got a Joan Armatrading fan club going and I'm pleased about that. I saw her in concert in Brighton and she was truly stunning. I was actually listening to 'Flight of the wild geese' as I opened this thread again.

If I might add my two penneth, I think "whatever's for us" surpasses the epynonymous, by a freckle at least.

I also have her epymnonymouus album and recently bought 'Me Myself I' an album I've had on vinyl for dickies years. Not quite as good on CD but mustn't grumble.

I only have a greatest hits and a live one someone taped for me (years ago obviously). Always meant to delve further as it's someone both Lori and I both like.
So If I were to buy 3 Joan A albums, what should they be?

My favourites:
1. Whatever's For Us (collaboration with Pam Nestor - 1972)
2. Joan Armatrading (1976)
3. Show Some Emotion (1977)
I think these are by far her best.

I liked Armatrading for some reason/bought all her on vinyl but retained only 1976 'Joan Armatrading' as I like it/it has that top song.
