Drive through or around London?

Posted by: fatcat on 02 May 2012

Tomorrow afternoon I will driving from Islington to Tunbridge Wells, hopefully at around 2pm. Will it be easier to drive though London or head back north and pick up the M25. Or is there a better route.

A couple of weeks ago I drove from the M1 to Woolwich, the satnav took me through the Blackwell tunnel. At 4.30pm it wasn't a pleasant experience.

Who in their right mind would want to drive round/through a major modern capital? Paris? Rome? Cairo?NYC?

So lucky we live 30-40 minutes from London by train, so much easier, unless you know of a reliable and cheap carpark area.

When you look at the traffic, it seems like a LOT of people want to drive through these cities. Traffic is always in equilibrium between desire, convenience, pride, anger, wasted-time, stress and frustration.

Me, I have much less tolerance to wasting time in traffic than most, and I don't do it very much at all. Others have a greater tolerance, and make up the bulk of the traffic we see.

Me neither despite a couple of tries to wangle a ride.

They do have a nice fleet to play with mind you, Jaguars, Harriers, Tornadoes and Eurofighters. The maintenance hanger was always good for a look round, if only to spot stuff I worked on as an apprentice at Fairey Hydraulics many years ago.

Enjoy the flying.
