speaker suggestions for NDX and Supernait

Posted by: APT on 06 May 2012

Hi,

I have recently purchased a SN and NDX . I am looking for new speakers preferably  floor standers. Room size is 3.5 m by 7m . Budget around 2- 2.5K £. Music taste is mainly hard rock , rock and  electric blues . I have seen the naim 400s which look very big for my room , I have home demoed  PMC 23s  with  the  SN and NDX the dealer had given me for a home demo. I plan to do so again once my new kit has run in. I liked the sound though some songs had a boomy bass at the dealers demo room and at home . My dealer suggested this was to do with the recording of those tracks.

Current speakers are B&W 685s placed about 1 foot away for the wall in an alcove . Local dealers stock neat, spendor and PMCs. Totem, Haberths  and Kudos are available a little further away. I read a lot on this forum about totem and kudos  speakers being good with naim kit. Any suggestions for my audition shortlist please ?

Pretty cool! I have a similar room, and also a Supernait and recently an NDX. My musical preference lies in the realm of Opeth, Porcupine Tree and 80ies metal. I love my Neat Motive 1 speakers. They do need some clearance from walls, but they've always managed to put a smile on my face.

Good luck!!

If you like the PMC, try the smaller GB1i or maybe the next size up FB1i. Both in your budget and can be located close to the wall if needs be. I pair the GB1i with ND5XS and they sound superb.

Totem Hawk and Forest, if you can audition them and they fit your budget....

Hi APT

I have a Supernait and a Unitiserve SSD. These are complimented by Spendor A5s. £1700, but I got them for £1500. These are floor standers, but are only about 790mm tall, so not too intrusive, just a nice size for my room 16'x11'. Of course, speakers are a personal thing, everyones hearing is different. One thing is for certain though, you really must try out your speakers with a Supernait.

I use kudos C1 speakers. These will be a great match for your setup.

Thanks for the suggestions  .

Totemphile can the Totem Hawks be placed about 1 to 1.5 feet away from the wall or would they need more room as they are rear ported.

Should be fine, but having some space around them will be beneficial. My Forest are 60 cm from the rear wall and about 40 cm from the side. It's just how I placed them, didn't pay too much attention to the measurements though. Each room is likely to differ, so home demo if you can. As a general rule, the Hawk are likely to require less space than the Forest. Very good speakers though, so well worth including in your demo list.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

Hi Gianno,

I listen to a lot of 80s metal  like metallica, megadeth  and slayer myself but have noticed my tastes are changing to rock and slightly more mellow stuff . I have started enjoying electric blues. I did audition the neat motive 1s and liked them , I auditioned the neat momentum 4is which were great also but with a deeper bass.

Regards.

1+

I use the Forests with my SN and after a long break-in period, they have settled in very nicely.  great imaging and well defined bass.  I have mine about 20 inches from the wall.  I listen to jazz, acoustic, vocals and some rock.  So far, they handle everything well.

Hi APT,

I have also listened to the Momentums, great speakers. My advice still stands on te motive ones... Let me tell you why.

The motive 1 is undeniably cheaper which will give you more room for another upgrade: the much praised hicap on the supernait. Not only will the hicap improve the soundstage, it will tighten up the bass presentation a great deal. To me that was very important because i like deep, but not boomy, bass. If you are leaning more towards blues and so on, the hicap is definately my additional advice. I experience a slight movement towards progressive rock from the 70ies in my musical preferences. Good luck!

Thanks Gianno,

This is something I had not thought about .
