File management on Synology NAS

Posted by: John Burrow on 11 May 2012

I'm currently running a Synology NAS, Mac Mini, HDX, 52 etc. It all sounds beautiful  but especially good when not going through the mac mini and the NDX plays the files directly through UPnP, I still however like the iTunes interface for convenience. My problem is my file system on the NAS is a mess, when a friend set it up for me he made a separate folder for iTunes, unfortunately the NDX only finds the Hi Res flies I put into the MUSIC folder of the NAS, I can see iTunes music if I have playback running on the mini but I would rather not be having to use my computer to access the music.  Can anyone suggest how to set up the file system on the NAS so the NDX sees all the music stored on the NAS and I can also use iTunes on occasion

What format is the music in?

The first thing to do is turn on the upnp media server on the nas.

The NDX will only see music contained in the default Music folder which is automatically set up when you turn on the Synology media server.

Simply move all of the music to this folder and the NDX should see it all.

If iTunes is using the NAS as it's media folder then you will need to tell iTunes you have moved the files, or better still move the iTunes referenced music files using iTunes itself.

Hi

I do not own a NAS (yet) but would think it should be possible to point out any directory for the UPnP function in the NAS interface? Have you tried to add you iTunes directory to the NAS/UPnP directories?

Thanks for the replies, I am having success with files that I've moved into the music folder on the NAS, It will now require a lot of patients to tidy them up within that folder.
