Is this BG the best female singer-songwriter to come out of America?

I think so! I've been listening to an awful lot to the divine Ms Gentry again these past couple of weeks and it's criminal that she isn't regarded as highly as, say Joni Mitchell.

This superb doc on BBC Radio 2 (available to listeners outside the UK AFAIK) tells the story pretty well, and if you'll excuse the presumption, I reckon it's worth an hour of your time...

Agreed Stu, great show. Even better music. Her early retirement was definitely a loss to music.

I remeber buying this album for my Father way back when it came out.

At the time i was into other types of music.

Its funny how ones musical taste changes over the years.

I have just mailed him to ask if he still has it?

I think Mary Chapin Carpenter is the best female singer/songwriter to emerge from the USA. However, I do like BG a great deal and have her first four albums. I'll have to listen to the documentary.

Stu,

In this case it was me abruptly answering the OP.

Kevin,

In regards female singers Guido and I do share many of the same "best" female singers.

I have to confess not knowing a great deal of BG outside her pop(chart) stuff.

Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, and Loreena McKennitt (she counts North America) are among my personal American favourites.

Favourites is of course is what one is asking when one asks "who is the best"?
