How to set up a NAS drive

Posted by: Ptangyang on 15 May 2012

Hi all

After some digging I'm about to invest in a qnap drive for my uniti. Being a bit of a noob to this naim world, I'm not sure what I need to do to set it up. I'm looking at the Ts212 or ts219P (incidentally, any comments on pros or cons on these 2 units?). Please take it slowly, what would my step by step process need to be from getting that qnap grey box home, to having glorious streaming music on my lovely black box.

Many thanks.

Rjstaines - out of interest, would you mind explaining why you bought the NDX as opposed to upgrading the HDX with an XPS/DAC etc?

Many thanks

BTW, is functionality a consideration or just noise because most NAS devices will force you to use the supplied UPnP software (or there will be limitations on what you can install). And they don!t all behave the same? Considerations include: Audio file format (different UPnP servers support different file formats) - do you care? Transcoding (some UPnP servers will let you transcode from one format to another on the fly) Source folders (some limit you to a single folder from which to stream audio files, yet you may, for whatever reason, have multiple stores) Configurable browse tree (are you happy to stick with the supplied browse tree or is it important to you to be able to define your own?) Options (e.g. how to display tracks from CDs with multiple discs, special treatment of "The...", etc.) I'm sure there are a number of people out there that don't really care but I do and am now on my fourth UPnP server (I have used and cast aside ReadyDLNA, Twonky and VortexBox - I could work within their constraints but they were all flawed yet Asset, which I ran on my PC in parallel was a perfect fit, and when I discovered that a WHS2011 version of Asset was available I upgraded from VB to WHS2011 with Asset, which makes a fine combination but requires a spare PC/server). All this IMHO, of course! My advice would be that all UPnP servers are not created equal, so, unless you either know what you're getting (are familiar with the options provided for the NAS you are buying), or don't care (and as I say, there will be many out there, myself excluded, who don't), that you do some research in order to avoid disappointment. Cheers Ian

Of course if you're using a Naim server (HDX, US), then you have Naim's UPnP software which seems better than most in what it presents and how it does it to the renderer (the NDX for example).  I continually revert to 'HDX' as my UPnP source in spite of having a number of alternatives offered to me on my NDX.  The Naim UPnP software just does what it says on the tin... enables you to find and play music.

The NDX wasn't 'as opposed to', it was 'as well as'.  I had HDX, DAC + 555PS (into 252/300) and added the NDX as a device for rendering UPnP.   So the HDX was relegated to ripper / server and the NDX digital out was fed to the DAC / 555PS.  In January I added an XP5XS to power the NDX (couldn't afford anything more).

Which leaves me now to put the 555PS onto my NDS and sell the DAC... which leaves the question about do I use the XP5XS to power the HDX or do I sell the XP5XS and leave the HDX internally powered (the subject of a post a few weeks ago which drew no conclusive answers btw).

Which leaves me and a few others wondering when our NDS's will be assembled, boxed and shipped...  but we Naim customers are a patient lot and would rather have the best NDS that can be designed, than an early bodge job (!!!  ooops - have rinsed my mouth out with soap).

Roger -if you are just using the HDX for UPnP serving duties then the external PS won't bring anything to the party. Put it towards the NDS -you lucky git

Is it just me or do the posts from McGhie seem like they have emanated from Spud in Trainspotting when he attends the job interview?

Roger, thanks for that.
