One of the 20th century's iconic singers. He performed and recorded just about the whole of the German Lied-repertoire, and also sang in many operas and other works. The recording I treasure most is his youthful performance of Hans Sachs, in Jochum's second, somewhat underrated, Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Ken, there's so much by him, you could fill a library. His main body of work is on Deutsche Grammophon, but the old EMI recordings are if anything the real treasures: in the 50s, his voice had a beautiful sheen, more a tenor than a baritone. For an overview that spans his career, this box is recommended although not all the music is equally fine.

Some highlights in Schubert Lieder:

(of seven or so official recordings, his best)

(highlights from his complete Schubert edition on DG)

If you like these, feel free to explore his recordings of Loewe and Schumann, less known but very good music and performances.

In opera and oratorio, he sang everything, whether it suited his voice or not: Wagner, Strauss but also Verdi, Haydn and Bach. Too many goodies to mention - but everyone with an interest in Wagner should have heard Karajan's cycle at least once. F-D was Wotan in Das Rheingold.
