Unitiserve album information issues
Posted by: CSI_Basel on 21 May 2012
Hi all
After listening to a Superuniti last month, I went back to the dealer and purchased a Superuniti and a Unitiserve. I wanted to avoid album art issues and also streaming issues so went for the Unitiserve though I felt it sounded better than my own cd rips.
Last night I got everything working and then I fed the Unitiserve some of my CDs. Of the first 3 discs, it only recognized one! So this meant I had to manually enter in the information using the nserve app on the iPad. Very convoluted!
If this is the success rate, i shudder to think how long it's going to take me to finish 500 CDs. I also had to search for the album art on the nserve app.
Since I can control the Unitiserve with the iPad then I take it the unit is connected to the Internet properly?

Not necessarily ... just that the UnitiServe and the iPad are connected to your network.
Can you take a look at the ripping monitor to see where the UnitiServe is looking up your CDs? It *SHOULD* be able to find your discs on AMG Online or FreeDB Online (in which case it is getting to the outside world) ... if it is skipping AMG Online and FreeDB Online and going to FreeDB local then the UnitiServe isn't getting to the outside world.
Cheers

Thanks Phil for the reply.
You mention a 'ripping monitor' - can you see this in the n-serve app or only on the desktop client?
I have not yet installed the desktop client on my laptop.
Thanks
You can see it on the nserve app - 2nd bottom on the menu on mine with hdx
Cheers Jeff!
I'll check tomorrow when I have some time.
Basel, I can tell you that out of the 200 cd's I've ripped, the uServe didn't get the album art only about 3 times.
Hopefully it's just a database selection issue as others said above. Or maybe you listen to some REALLY obscure music??
I've ripped c.500 albums, only a dozen or so without art, which the app then helped me find. Latest release of nserve is really good.
Check the UnitiServe is getting internet look ups as described by earlier posters.
However, when I borrowed one from my local dealer out of 10 ripped discs it got one (La Roux, so not obscure) completely wrong and couldn't find the artwork to 'The Matrix'. Wasn't a hard decision not to spend £2k at that point!

I submit that the issue may well have been with the database, not the hardware. But in any event, I'm glad that you didn't buy what you didn't want!

Exactly what a good dealer is for
I've stuck with my rip via PC, store on NAS, stream through Sonos for the moment. But I will get the nDac back again for another try once it's had a chance to run in.
My score with albums was:
albums ripped 220,
artwork missed 12,
unknown album 1 (which btw was Neil Sedakas Laughter in the Rain).
Cd singles did not fare so well with a strike rate of about 50%.
Overall though I did not find the process a chore and it took less than a week.

Please be aware that when the UnitiServe or HDX cannot find album information or cover art, this is mainly a problem of the AMG of FreeDB database. Naim can't do anything about that...

Michel
It definitely is not connected to the Internet. Don't know why because it's a wired connection and I tested it with my laptop.
The dealer already used this machine for 2 weeks on his network. Would this make a difference?
Manual says I should contact either Naim or my dealer if the machine has been used before and I can't make an Internet connection.
Help needed!!
I had same problem with my hdx, but would not even work with iPad. Blamed my network first, but after having been returned to naim it worked fine as soon as connected into router.
An update - spoke to the dealer today and when he heard that I had a Swisscom combined modem/router said that was the problem. He had 2 other customers with the same router and they could not get it to work with the Unitiserve. Bugger!
He recommended another type so i'll have to look into this now. Now getting up and changing CDs doesn't seem so bad now!

It could be that the is filtering traffic or is port blocking - both are perfectly feasible.
Can I suggest that you contact us directly at Naim (as per the manual and the "Naim Support" sticky at the top of each forum page) where we will be able to assist you far more effectively - I'm afraid that support requests on the forums only get seen "by chance" due to the amount of traffic on here.
Cheers

Thanks Phil. I'll give you a call on Monday morning.
I changed my router and now the unitserve is using AMG Online and finding the album art on its own. Finally everything is working fine
I'm pleased that you have finally got it working properly. Quite often these things are trial and error. In your case, it was your router. Having said all that, it is not uncommon for AMG, or other metadata providers to get it wrong, simply by human error of data input. A perfect example of this, is when I ripped The Beatles 'Love' album on my Unitiserve. AMG listed it as 'CIRQUE DU SOLEIL', with absolutely no reference to the fab four! Thankfully, I was able to edit the data manually, using n-serve on my iPad.
