Unitiserve file transfer - is it possible to

Copy ripped CD WAV files from the hard drive on the Unitiserve to Assetnas NAS?

I am trying a Unitiserve as a ripping device (just got Assetnas 4TB) and wondered if it was possible to copy and paste ripped music files from the hard drive of the Unitiserveto the NAS?

Tried but paste does not seem to work?

Is it overkill to have Unitiserve just as a ripping device? (NDX / NDS about to land)

Yes in my view, as you could rip with a Mac or a PC and create the same files.

The US does a lot of other things that helps justify its cost.

Not sure why you wouldn't use it to its full if you have it.

BTW you can get it to rip to a NAS if that's what you want.

IME, the value added by the HDX or Unity Serve in the NDX/NDS context is bullet-proof, no-fuss WAV ripping with the inherent WAV-metadata issues handled for you, rather well.  There are many alternative ways to get there, but none I can think of that you can sit your spouse and kids down with on day-one and have everybody getting the best rips possible without complexity.  It is tempting to underestimate these capabilities.  Even the Naim rippers are not perfect; but they come closer than I have yet, with all of my experience and determination over the course of a year.

If you don't think WAV sounds better than the alternatives, then the case is a little less compelling, as other formats seem to have fewer meta-data troubles.

Sad my demo HDX went back yesterday.  Thinking . . .

So CDI how did you sort it ? Can yo copy wav files from unitiserve to another location ?

Posted on: 02 June 2012 by rjstaines

Yes.  In windows network view, click on the HDX or US,  double click on Music folder,  double click on MQ folder... there are your ripped WAV files. Copy and paste these where you wish.  But of course, be careful not to modify the contents of the MQ folder or you will confuse the HDX / US !   If you accidentally do, then you need to do a rescan of the music store from your HDX / US menu, this rebuilds its internal index.

Another way is to create a share on NAS drive that is seen on HDX / US.  Promote this share to a Music Store. MOVE your music, using the HDX / US menu, to the new Music Store. This gets the WAV files off the internal hard drive and on to your NAS drive.  You can then see the share on your NAS drive and copy the contents anywhere...  but I can't see why you would want to do this unless you wanted to 'unload' the internal disks of the HDX or US onto an external NAS.

'Bon chance' Steve, as I think I heard Phil say once.

This answers same question for me. I am getting a Qute for office and so can copy my music from NAS at home burned from UnitiServe to another NAS and take this to work. Assume this will work?
Posted on: 02 June 2012 by rjstaines

Yes Steve, it works fine. I'm listening to the UPnP input from the 'MQ' folder on my NAS drive playing through my Qute right now to check it works before responding to your post.

Rger what is the MQ folder? I can not see it.

Using Windows - I open the Network window, double click on the US,(Windows Media Player opens), click on Music, I get 3 folders, `Artist`, Àlbum`, and `Genre`, I do not see an MQ folder.

or, I open Naim DTC, (no Music folder)?

Just curious as I am trying to copy ripped albums to a USB drive now....and failing miserably as usual.

Hi Jason,

I'm not sure why you see what you see.  On my uServe, which is the 2tb version, there are two top-level folders, Downloads and Music.  Music is where the uServe rips to, and Downloads is where I can put my own digital downloads, etc.  Within the Music folder is a folder named MQ, and within that folder are folders for each artist.

The network permissions allow you to copy files from the Music/MQ/ directories, but not write files to them.

I think that Windows is not showing you the actual directory structure on your uServe.

Cheers Bart,

I will check it out when I get back from our first Oslo Naim gathering.

By the way, what does the MQ stand for?

Or you could use DTC Back Up option to back up to your NAS, and schedule it to run weekly (as a 'Differential' copy so you only back up the changes), then you've regularly got an up to date copy.

Its really easy to set up and a great feature to make life easy.

Doh! Just seen that this post was from last year, long since sorted I'm sure.

But I don't know what MQ stands for Jason, sorry mate.

Music Quality

Posted on: 27 April 2013 by Bart

I always figured it stood for "Medium Quality," as on the older version there were also LQ and HQ folders (never used).  Low Quality, Medium Quality, High Quality (???)

Posted on: 27 April 2013 by Claus-Thoegersen

Yes medium quality, this is a better guess since we know that sometimes in the future also known as the time the next server firmware is realeased there will be a possibility to create mp3 versions of the rips, so that is probably lq low quality. The interesting question is what is hq high quality going to be used for?

With I think Media player 11 or 12 Media player interacts like a upnp renderer andplays the music.

The way to get to the folders in Win 7 is,

from  "computer" find network find the server called hdxxxx or ns0xxxx op probably uservexxxx or something like that. Now you can see the music folder and inside that folder the hq, lq, mq, and playlist folders are, the rips are in the mq folder.

You will have to hack the server to be able to delete or change files, otherwise you will just get permission errors if you try to alter or delete the files.

MP3s ate housed in the LQ folder. I thought this functionality was already out?

Hi Jason,

thanks a lot for the good beer and company at the "Naimbies" meeting on saturday. It was a splendid evening indeed

I think the problem you are facing trying to copy rips to your USB stick is that you browse the userve with mediaplayer instead of explorer. When you open the network folder you should find the shared userve folders under Computers and not under Media Devices. Does this make sense to you?

If not I could try to help you hands-on via a Teamviewer session, just call med and we arrange it

As Terjehaa says, you're opening the US with the wrong program - you need explorer not WMP. Try this - RIGHT click on the US in the network view then click EXPAND. This shows the Music folder. Single click on the music folder to select it then RIGHT click on Music and click EXPAND. This will show you the sub folders (EX, HQ, LQ, MQ, playlists).   You should be able to work on the MQ folder from here.

This ONLY works if you keep your fingers crossed on both hands all the while    and if you're using Win 7. If you have Win XP, then instead of EXPAND, you see EXPLORE.  Can't remember what you see with Vista, I'm afraid.

Hope this helps.

Sorry chaps I have been away and busy.

Thanks Terjerhaa and Roger for your very sound advice, not tried it yet but I will when I get the chance.

And thanks Terjehaa for hosting a lovely evening of good beer, good sounds and good company. The offers still there of you want to hear that ND5.

Jason.
