I want to stream
Posted by: gaboki on 03 June 2012
I have a 250 nap; cds2; xps, 82 and hi cap. Have about 150gb of music on computer. I want to get into streaming and have a budget of £4k. Pls help with a rep by step guide on what I will need to set up.
Gaboki,
That's a rather open-ended question.
The first point would have to be how is the 150GB on your computer encoded? And do you also have the CDs?
Are you looking for sound quality or convenience?
You have £4,000 to spend - which gives you a number of options. But you have to decide what you're looking for first.
Sorry...meant to add: Might be best posting this in the Streaming section.

Agreed. Topic moved to the Streaming Room.
Disk space may be cheaper, but you need to have more nowadays. It is basically a moot point. The $200 750GB drive i needed to fit my collection 5 years ago is still a $200 drive, it is just 3TB now. In this way, storage prices are always static.
Then when you consider you may want said storage in NAS form, storage isn't really cheaper at all.

1) Speak with nearby Naim dealer.
2) Home demo (a) ND5 XS, then add (b) nDAC, then add (c) Power-Line.
3) Decide for yourself marginal benefit of 2 b and c.
4) Buy Synology NAS with at least 1 tb of memory.
5) Ask Naim dealer to set up NAS.
6) Re-rip CD collection to NAS using dBpoweramp if not already lossless, uncompressed. Otherwise, copy CD collection to NAS.
7) Enjoy the music.
Streaming is very straight forward, however you do need a good preferably wired local network using preferably a switch between the components like NAS, upnp streamer and network player.
Many people who seem to struggle with streaming on this forum are either using a poor network or poor upnp server software. So if you can have wired Ethernet between your NAS / upnp server and Network player and you have a reliable upnp server/OS combo - if not using Naim Unitiserve or equiv (it would appear Windows is easier to set up than Macs according to many on these forums in this regard, although a few like Guido Fawkes seem to have found a way forward with Macs) you then can look to streaming with confidence.

gaboki, how familiar are you with computers and networking? It's a difficult question to answer without knowing where to start.
