Volume control with n-Stream?

Posted by: plocker on 05 June 2012

I have an NDX, with 102 pre & 180 power, with naps & hi-cap. I am using the n-Stream nap on my iphone to search & play my music stored on a NAS QNAP TS-212.  I was wondering if the n-Stream app could also control the volume?  Currently I use the NDX's remote in conjunction with the app on my phone...

Don't you have a volume slider at the bottom of the screen when playing a track?

I thought the ndx was like a true source, i.e. no amp inside.

If so, then no nstream will not control the volume of a 102, the 102 is a very old amp.

For problems with drop outs, it probably your network, and you are probably using a homehub

No.  I was wondering whether it was because my amp was so old.  I take it you do have a volume slider showing on your n-Stream app - in which case what amps are you using?

Yes, I have a volume slider on both iPhone and iPad apps.  I'm using a Superuniti.

Sorry, I may be missing something here, but surely the NDX is either controlling volume by attenuating the signal in the digital domain, or by outputting RC5 remote codes via the remote cable. If it's the former, the amps age has nothing to do with it.

I'm not sure whether the NDX is fixed output or variable?

I assume there's no RC5 in on the 103 as it's so old.

have a hard time with networking, but doesn't everyone run it through a home hub, saying that i have found a i button on the n-streamer setup that says stay connected, so thats on now

Hi dave, i did not think the 102 had the link on the back for remote codes, if it does then happy days.

The 102 does not have any rc5 jacks.

The n-stream app controls the volume of the amplifier via the system automation function in the NDX - sending RC5 codes via the remote connection. As Gary says the 102 does not have an RC5 input so can't be controlled from the NDX.

Thanks for all the replies. I suspected it was down to the amp being old (without knowing any of the technical stuff).  I just wanted to ensure I hadn't missed something simple like not enabling something on the n-Stream app.  When I eventually upgrade my amps I know I will have the volume functionality.
