article on the need for hires audio

Posted by: Claus-Thoegersen on 10 June 2012

While looking for something else on the net, google found this very interesting article, that basically states that 24 bit audio is overkill for people who listen to  audio, but may be a good idea in audio production.

The articles were originally written in 2000, and the author seems to work in television, but also to have worked with audio engineering.

Claus,

his mop up comments seem to suggest he's had a bit of a rethink. The original series relies a bit too much on the oft trodden paths of 'I can/cannot hear a difference' and 'Scientific reasoning does/does not support'. Neither of which for me capture the whole story when it comes to musical enjoyment. But the follow up questions and answers I found very informative.

I personally am not sure I'm getting any 'added benefit' from a fairly limited test of high-res (24/96) on my system. Although, after updating to version 3.13 on my Uniti, I'd swear that the "Meet Me In London" album has a more appealing sound to it.  That might support his point about other factors in the chain being more significant (or confirm my loss of sanity, depending on your viewpoint).  Perhaps a couple of extra albums might need to be purchased in 16/44 and 24/96.

I do like his closing comments about striving for quality, however that may be achieved. Thanks for posting the link.
