HDX Further help please.

Posted by: GraemeH on 18 June 2012

I've searched the forum but it must be that my questions are so mind bogglingly dumb that noone has dared to ask before......

1.  If I place a 'music' folder on my home-pc (which the HDX is networked to) can I download music into that folder and configure the HDX to play from it?

2.  If 'yes' then how do I get the HDX to find the folder? (I've read the manual but am no clearer)

3.  Is it infact the case that I need a dedicated hard-drive to be networked to the HDX to both stream from and back-up to?

4.  Can I backup from the HDX to a portable hard-drive connected to a usb socket at the back of the HDX?

5.  If so, can the same hard-drive be used to stream music to the HDX?

I've a horrible feeling I won't understand the asnswers either....but if you can help I'd be most grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Graeme

You can if your PC is set up to share that folder on the network as a SAMBA / SMB share ...

... unfortunately nowadays Windows 7 doesn't like to be asked to do simple folder sharing and so tries to protect you from yourself by wanting to hide everything behind "homegroups". Some W7 users have been able to set up simple folder sharing and some have had a real pig of a time (there's lots of information if you Google).

This is generally why we recommend using a NAS.

If the folder is shared as a simple network shared folder with no usernames and passwords to access it then the HDX should find it and list it in the shared folders list (under "Manage Shares" in the manual) - then if necessary you can simply set it to "active" and the HDX will scan it for music files.

If you have an HDX-SSD then you *WILL* need to set up a network location for it to rip CDs too as it has no built-in storage for CDs - if you have a hard disc based HDX then the unit will store ripped CDs on its own hard disc.

If you have a single drive unit then your HDX will not back itself up unless you nominate a network shared folder to be used as a backup location.

No - USB hard discs cannot be used for backups.

The USB support on the servers was intended to be used for the connection of transient collections of music - i.e. MP3 players or USB memory sticks.

Naim do not support the use of USB hard discs on the server USB ports.

Brilliant, thanks Phil.

It is Windows 7 and a 1tb HDX, I should have said.

I'll try out tonight and see how it goes.....G
