unitiserve - album info

Posted by: des hill on 18 June 2012

A little while ago I purchased the Unitiserve – and now, having ripped well over 150 cd’s, am hooked on the concept.  I’m finding that the album information (like others?), that is presented is infuriating, in it’s inconsistency, inaccuracies, oddities, and very occasionally, by just being totally wrong.  This is making the finding of a recording rather time consuming sometimes

.

I’ve concluded that I would like to do is enter album data, or edit what is there by direct keyboard entry via a pc.  By this I mean all data, and not the limited facility on the IPad.

I would like to add new or remove unused genres, input and sort composers by surname, edit track and album titles, input and sort performers by surname, for starters, then to remove ‘the’ from various titles and names.  All of which would give a simpler and more elegant list, and be far easier to navigate.

Attempts to find a way to do this have not been successful, I may be missing something.  Information on ‘desk top client’ (which might be helpful?), and ability to down load is limited.  Can anyone point me in a direction, or share similar experiences and how they got round similar issues ??

Hi Des

I have a Unitiserve, and put all my posts on the Streaming Audio forum. You will probably get a better response on that forum. Yes, some of the Metadata can be a pain. I ripped the Beatles 'Love' album, and it listed it as 'Cirque du Soleil'!! But now that you can edit most of it on n-serve, it's not too bad.

Best wishes

I'm surprised you have found the metadata so much of an issue in c300 rips I havent had nearly as many problems -  May sound like a stupid question but I assume that your US is connected to the tinternet? You can easily check this by looking at the rip monitor when you next rip a cd. The man himself Phil Harris tells you how to check in the link below:

You can only edit the Album title, Track title and Artist (not performer / conducter etc). If you don't want to use Nserve you can do this via DTC on a PC.  However, if you need to amend album artwork then I recommend that you stick with Nserve on the iPad.

Genres can also be edited and sorted easily via Naim DTC. Link below should give you the guidance you need:

Hope this helps mate

Hello Des,

+ 1 to Prubast's advice.

It sounds like your Unitiserve is using its internal database for lookups... which it will do if not connected to the 'net. If you are connected then you must have some really obsure records. I want copies .

As for sorting composer by surname, can't be done. It makes no sense, but that's the way the AMG database is set up. It's bloody frustrating looking through all the Johanns. The only workaround is to edit album titles by preceding them with the composer's surname. All is forgiven though once you start listening.

Thanks to you all for the replies.  It is connected to the net, and I do have some unusual discs, some spoken word, and cd’s of birdsong really do cause problems, the multi cd sets of Richter’s Bach cantatas does cause the odd bout of indigestion as well.  The changing of the title to include composers is about the best way of affecting a short term fix, I really hope there is a firmware update on the horizon.  I fail to see what the real difference between performer and artist is, nor wht ‘data’ should be a genre, when the whole of world music (all of it - indian - latin american - japanese) is classified as ‘international’.

Enough of the moaning.  I must say that after a month, and  being initially slightly disappointed with the sound, that it has a gained a real sparkle – played through the nd5xs and a Meridian pre/power – so much so that my Meridian cd player, is likely to grow cobwebs.  A note of credit to Simon at Home Media in Maidstone, on the day the U/Srve was delivered, Naim announced the2TB, which was a bit of a bummer, nevertheless they did manage to get it swapped.  Love to spend more money with them, but, apart possibly from a power supply, I’m pretty much fully kitted out for a few years now.
