Calling Fans of The 'oo

The 'ho doesn't work in text. I gather that refers to an American lady of the night.
Anyway - stop rambling man. There's a prog on BBC4 on Friday 29th about the making of 'Quadrophenia'. Info link below.

That's followed by the fillum.
John.
Thanks. I'll set the timer for that.
Great programme. I really enjoyed it.
I wanted to know what happened to 'Chad', the guy who was photographed as 'Jimmy' for the album artwork. Turns out to be a guy called Terry Kennett. I found the information below by paddling round the interweb.
John.
Long time since this thread was started but yeah, that guy, Chad... I used to live two doors down from him, in Fulham, until 2005.
Crikey, what a blast from the past.
He was ancient then, and must be more ancient now, a little old man, I guess he must be close to 60 if he's still alive. He has a degenerative lung disease, mebbe emphysema?
I recall him having a birthday, maybe his 52nd birthday or something, and I said to my boyfriend, "Doubt if he'll see 53 at this rate" ... they used to all sit round my house smoking and drinking till ridiculous o'clock in the morning.
Prolly got a picture from that era, somewhere, except it might have been destroyed: Hammersmith and Fulham Council "accidentally" destroyed all our belongings from their storage depot.
Chad used to cough all the time and spit in my wastepaper baskets when he came to visit ... ugh!!! So I put a special wastepaper basket beside the chair he used to sit in and made my boyfriend empty it out after he was gone (!!) Ugh ugh ugh
Last time I saw him, he was minding my dog for me, cos we were being evicted for subletting - but he wanted the dog gone, too expensive to feed, or it pissed in his lounge or something ... so I went to get the dog.
They had run out of coffee - he always had a house full of what seemed (to me, at least) to be scrounging crackheads - and everyone was always skint. So I was feeling generous and went to buy some coffee, just a regular jar of coffee, but the old bastard had the gall to complain that I had only bought Nescafe and not Gold Blend, he was giving it large and throwing a strop "But I always drink Gold Blend."
I just walked out thinking "Well nobody told me, so when I'm payin for it, you'll drink plain old Nescafe, you ungrateful old so and so!" ... LOL
Not seen the old bastard since. Might pop round and see if he's still alive. I'd like to see his Mrs. She were a sweet old thing.
I spoke to my ex, having told him about this post, and he said he found out last week that both Terry and his wife had since died, but he didn't know much else.
Bless. They were a funny old couple. RIP, I guess.
A critique of the programme here and confirmation that Terry Kennett died in 2010.

John.
Good work J.N.
Strange how the silence around Chad shouted at me during this fascinating programme.
Cheers

Fascinating programme providing a bit of insight into one of my favourite albums. I thought Mark Kermode stepped pretty close to the pretentious line though.
And yes "Chad" was quite conspicuous by his absence which was a shame as it would have been nice to hear his side of things.
The post quoted above is hilarious though. It sounds like a scene from Quadrophenia itself.
It was a great show to catch, did't even know Chad had passed, RIP Chad.
I don't think that I mentioned it on here before but in 2009 there was a Quadrophenia Musical which toured the U.K. and I attended it at the Cambridge Arts Theatre, is was a truly fantastic production, the music was spot on, I have read on the NME site that Mr Townshend may be doing a Quadrophenia tour this year.
The Who were all about contradictions. Daltrey imo was one of the greatest rock vocalists ever, Moon and John E were awesome as a rhythm section but not in the conventional way, Pete T a not a very good guitarist which I offer to counter his opinion that Keith was not a very good drummer. Masters of the 3 minute single and then not to be left out went with the serious "rock" crowd. Quad was an excellent album in terms of its content track by track but as a whole I rarely play it. The film is a superb portrayal - Tommy was terrible as was the original album but for the genius of Pinball Wizard - the chord sequence of Csus4, C, B flatsus4, B Flat, Gsus4, G, Fsus4, F - I've never quite got my left hand around that lot! - defies Townsend's limitations as a guitarist. Who's Next is considered by many as their best album but is the outcome of a far greater failed Townsend project
As a live band they could blow anyone else away but they lacked finesse and quite often were off key, out of tune and time.
The documentary the other evening was very good.
Pretty much have to agree with The Strat. Quad stands head and shoulders above anything else The Ooo put to vinyl. Pete may not have the reputation as the greatest guitarist who ever lived but he more than made up for any technical shortcomings by his inventive use of chords. By the way Strat, Pinball Wizard is a piece of cake to play. Just use your little finger to hold down the A, D and G strings for the suspended chords and use the barre E shape for the major chords. Before you know it you will be playing windmill guitar.

Listen to the acoustic guitar work from about 3:48 in "Overture" to the early part of "It's a Boy"; true Pete doesn't "shred" so much on leads as others, but as a melodic rhythm player he's excellent; his right hand strumming is where the skills are truly evident.
Plus the genius of his composition and arranging skills in his hey day are really something.
I still prefer Whos Next, Quad was aimed at me but I never really understood why everyone thinks it SO good.
I used to use the fish and chip shop thats pictured on the inside cover in the early 70s.
I used to do my bit for anglo scandinavian relations after a night out on the lash and cod and chips.
Who's next always did it for me.
Stu.
We used that chippie, before the film made it impossible to get into.
I can See For Miles has just come on Radio Paradise as I write this!!!
