Moving files between drives?

Hi all

Was just wondering, as a lot is made of trying to get bit perfect rips from CD's. If you copy say a FLAC file from a PC hard drive across the network to a NAS drive, can you guarantee it is still bit perfect?? or at least should it be??

I wouldn't be concerned.

If the file copy across a network connection weren't exact the use of networking to move files around in business would have crumbled and it would not be in use today. Data files from programs such as Word or Excel need to be exact copies just as much as audio files.

Cheers Geoff

I did think that to be honest, but that got me thinking why is it so difficult to get a bit perfect file onto your drive from a CD. After all its only a digital file on the CD isnt it?

It depends on the condition of the CD. You should be able to easily get a bit perfect rip of a new CD. This may not be straightforward/possible for some used CDs. In either case, for peace of mind you want to rip using software that uses AccurateRip to confirm whether or not you have a bit perfect rip. Otherwise you're just hoping/trusting. In the latter case you want to rip using software that can work around any issues the optical drive has in extracting the data out (e.g. by reripping whole tracks where the rip is not perfect and by reripping bad frames). For that matter, you also want to maximise your chances of getting a good rip by using an optical drive that is good in this respect. My laptop's Pioneer drive gets better results than my PC's Teac drive, which beats my Samsung one. Cheers Ian
