auto-transmissions; who left-foot brakes?

Posted by: James L on 28 June 2012

I've recently taken delivery of my first ever automatic transmission vehicle.

I've taken to driving it F1 style by braking with my left foot. I find this way smoother than using the right foot between both pedals as the right foot can feather the gas pedal.

I've asked a few mates if they left-foot brake and they were, like, "huh?".

BTW, I'm right-footed.

Yes.

I left-foot braked when I had front wheel drive rally cars, but hardly ever on automatic road cars - you can usually get your right foot onto the brake pedal from the accelerator faster than the left from its resting position.

To add to the thread, I have always left foot brakes, from my early rally driving days, some 30 years ago when I raced a Mk 1 escort RS1600.

Never got out of the habit, and find it quicker and more responsive.

Will be putting it to the test again soon as for my 25th wedding anniversary my wife has bought me a silverstone track day. Get to race a ford rally car, a caterham 7, an Aston Martin and a Ferrari.

My son has also bought a track day, so will be interesting to see if the young upstart can beat the old codger (and wether left foot braking gives me an edge)

Guess I never got into rally before, or any serious driving sessions on my FF cars. Have only tracked FR cars

Been mostly driving FR cars with normal manual trannies ... So I just stick to clutch for left foot.
