A Brit in the men's singles final for the first time in 74 years.

Well done Andy Murray. Good luck on Sunday big guy.

Of course you realize being a Scotsman, he absolutely cannot win:

Never mind, there's always the doubles final...British men in Wimbledon finals, you wait over 50 years and then...

Posted on: 07 July 2012 by Mike-B

I'm hoping for another British double - at Silverstone

But good luck to Andy & here's hoping for 3 Brits on the podium this weekend

He will only be abandoned as a dour scot if he looses - until next year

I hope Federer wins. Murray does nothing for being a sportsman.

I hope Murray wins. At least he is not the stereotype dour Scotsman who can't crack a smile and has a face like a bag of chisels. Or not.

Still considerably richer than me though!

Why do you say this? I'm not sure what you actually mean to be honest.

Posted on: 07 July 2012 by J.N.

There was a wonderful 'character contrast' when Murray played Marcos Baghdatis. The Cypriot was smiling away and seemed to be having a great time out there. From dour Murray all we got was the usual 'ape-man anguish' facial contortions. I do wish he'd cheer up a bit.

I'd love to see him win though.

John.

Of course there is absolutely nothing stereotypical about attacking someone for not being what you think he ought to be whilst simultaneously failing to recognise that if he were what you wanted he would in fact be a stereotype of a successful sports person of little interest whatsoever. It would of course never be deemed by some members of this forum to be uncivil if not downright rude to act in such a way and it would appear to be beyond the bounds of possibility to just wish him success without piling such appalling crap on him. How many here with such an idiotic opinion will ever recognise that it is precisely the contrast that holds their interest in sport?

I thought that Scots do not mind to be called British as long as they are not mixed up with English.

I think Roger Federer is the best player I've seen and my memory goes back to seeing Rod Laver in his prime, but I'm 100% hoping for a British win

We have already had a British triumph in the doubles with Jon Marray.

So let's hope Andy Murray can add another British win ... he has been superb in this tournament ... he's done nothing wrong and a lot right in my book and personally I'd sooner Andy won than smiled all the time.

So c'mon Andy ....

Currently at an all-time British high!

Apparently, [according to the English media] he's always British when he wins and Scottish when he loses.

Well said Guido. The same people posting the nonsense are of course exactly the same people who complain when the media build someone up to knock them down. The same people who abhor Chelsea for many right reasons but allow their hatred to blind them to several outstanding performances in the CL. I cannot imagine why that might be. I'm Welsh. I have no interest in Murray from that perspective but I appreciate great sportsmen and women full stop. Federer is an all time great in gentle decline. Today may or may not be another step toward the changing of the guard but it promises much. Murray has played well; dug deep repeatedly where he would previously struggled, and absolutely deserves to be there. Tennis is the winner. Ignorant hatred should be challenged at every step especially where a keyboard (or touchscreen) allows people to post anonymously. I'm from the same island as Andy Murray. Good luck to him but let's hope it's a great match.

Mike Hughes, I'll happily have you a game of tennis (I play in the league); when you make a mistake, I'll raise my fist and shout "yes!" and perhaps even laugh at you. We'll see how long the tennis match lasts.

Murray is a tosser.

Whilst we anticipate the final can I just point out some bona-fide UK sporting winners. A British cyclist and his team are ahead in The Tour De France, and we have an English Cricket team who are No.1 at Test cricket, defending T20 champions and a smidge (and one rained off match) from being No 1 at ODI's too. They just thrashed Australia three times in a row. The problem is we are just getting used to that excellence so it is rather being ignored just now.

As for Murray, if he plays at his best it will be a great final but Federer plays such beautiful tennis and is such a gent (to outside appearances) that my loyalties are with him. I admire Murray's abilities but when he goes into a major on-court sulk he turns me right off.

I did watch the conclusion of the mens doubles last night and saw two guys not just playing well but clearly enjoying themselves too. Great stuff.

I wish Murray good luck, though Federer is superb and I expect him to win yet another Grand Slam.  With Murray, he has achieved much in his career and I'm sure Lendl's influence is helping him with the "mind game" of tennis.  With the intense media scrutiny players these days need all the help they can get with PR and I'm sure he regrets his earlier comment about wanting anyone playing against England to win (even if he probably still thinks it!).  You have to admire Murray's fighting spirit and if a player deserved to win Wimbledon I'm sure it is him.

Yes, the doubles last night was a joy to watch.

Nadal v Federer final 2008 shows what tennis can be like. Murray is like Keegan was in football; a lot of effort, but no finesse.

As to the idiotic opinion that someone who does't wish Murray all the best has some sort of preconceived idea how a player should behave, McEnroe is my all time favourite player. He only lost his rag at his own mistakes and the linesmen. Oh, and he wasn't ugly.

I'm with you on that Bruce and we could add the England football team who did not lose a match in Euro 2012 so things are looking up for British sport.

I'll be supporting the GB team in the Olympics whatever the sport ... a little upset that I won't see Jordan Rhodes as GB centre forward in the football because as GB we should pick the best - Wales, Scotland, Ireland or England doesn't matter to me .... if we compete as GB then I like to see us win (and play well). Unless playing against England, I'd support Wales, Ireland or Scotland if they were competing separately.

My dear Count, Kevin Keegan was a superb player in my view and I'm not only one to think so as he was European player of the year on at least one occasion.

I think you are being a bit harsh on Andy Murray though ... I've never seen him laugh at an opponent ... I have seen him win a lot of a crucial points though and serve really well when it mattered most.

I think a British Wimbledon champion would be a great boost for the sport in this country.

McEnroe was a great a player and a decent commentator too.

Sounds fair enough.

I just hope for a great match today, history on the line - Murray could be the first British winner since Perry 76 years ago or Federer can tie Sampras for his 7th title.
