Led Zep. Most underrated song......

There isn't a Led Zeppelin song that is underrated. NOT ONE.

'Wearing and Tearing' for me, which begs up the question, which of the last two 'studio' releases by the band so you prefer, 'In Through the Out Door' or 'Coda'?

Years ago I would have said 'In Through the Out Door', but now I play 'Coda' quite a lot, and greatly prefer it.

"Carouselambra" - very odd, very un-Zepesque in many ways, but bluddy brilliant all the same. Awesome JPJ bass playing on that one.

Not underrated but just my favourite: "Since I have been loving you"

The Rover

Posted on: 10 July 2012 by JamieL_v2

While on the subject of Led Zeppelin, has anyone heard anything of Plant's current band The Sensational Space Shifters?

Robert Plant - Vocals, Percussion
Skin Tyson - Guitars, Banjo
John Baggott - Keyboards
Dave Smith - Drums
Billy Fuller - Bass
Justin Adams - Guitars, African Stringed Instruments(?), Percussion
Juldeh Camara - African Stringed Instruments(?), Percussion
Patty Griffin - Guest Vocals, Mandolin, Guitar

I am grabbing a recording of a small gig he did this year in Glouchester. A lot of this lineup are from Strange Sensation, plus a couple from Bay of Joy. I loved Strange Sensation, but band of Joy left me cold, although I know a lot of furm memebrs really liked them.

The Rover - my all time favourite.  Has to be one of the 1st tracks I play, with any new bit of hifi...!!

RP's Space Shifters - no, not heard anything, but the line up suggests Strange Sensation Mk2 - which would be no bad thing, IMHO....!!

Re: Space Shifters

I gave the recording a quick listen, a fairly poor audience recording, but the sharer said they went for the show, not to make a great recording, so fair enough.

The band kind of sound half way between Strange Sensation and Band of Joy, not as rocky as the former, and not as country as the latter. Quite folky, with some of the interpretations of the Led Zeppelin tracks being very folky.

Personally I don't like Patty Griffin's voice, but she is from a style of music that doesn't appeal to me. Pity as Bron-y-aur-Stomp was very close to the original, but her harmony singing killed it for me, but then might lift it for others, so each to their own.

Plant sounded as though he was enjoying himself. I won't keep the recording though, just too poor quality sound to actually enjoy listening to.

Howard:

Coda is good, but did take a while to grow on me. I do skip the drum solo track, but then I skip all drum solos, except those by Art Blakey. The second side (track 5-8 on CD) gives an idea of how 'In Through the Out Door' might have sounded if Page and Bonham had made the album they wanted, but were too into their substances of choice to have any sway by then.

It is a pity they never played 'Carouselambra' live, that is one of the tracks from 'In Through The Out Door' that I really like, along with 'In The Evening'.

Buy the original CD not the remaster.

Always if possible, Stu. Just scoping out a copy now.

Got diverted by mowing front "lawn" / weedbed before it pisses down.

Wow, they have really kept under the radar. Hope you enjoy the show Kevin.

This thread started me thinking about what songs Led Zeppelin never played live, so I made a list, and discovered that there is a Wikipedia page for every Led Zeppelin song, as well as the various live resources by Led Zepplein fans and collectors. Anyway, it is very anal, but here is the list......

All of Led Zeppelin I and IV were played live by the band.

The following songs were never played live in their entirety by the band, a couple were played in soundchecks while writing them, or were dropped from set lists after rehearsal. Snippets of many of theses songs worked their way into instrumental sections, or when Plant was improving vocals.

Led Zeppelin II
"Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)"   - only played live by Plant in 1990

Led Zeppelin III
"Hats Off to (Roy) Harper"

House of the Holy
"D'yer Mak'er"

Physical Graffiti
"Custard Pie" - played by Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes, and part of the track at one gig in 1975
"The Rover"  - intro used for opener of the show, and into Sick Again for the 1977 tour.
"Houses of the Holy"  - played by Plant and the Band of Joy
"In the Light" - played by Plant and The Strange Sensation and Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes
"Down by the Seaside"
"Night Flight"
"Boogie with Stu"

Presence
"Royal Orleans"
"Candy Store Rock"
"Hots On for Nowhere" - played by Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes,
"Tea for One" - played live by Page & Plant in 1996

In Through The Out Door
"South Bound Suarez"
"Fool in the Rain"  - only performed by Plant and Pearl Jam at a benefit show.
"Carouselambra"   - part the middle section was played live by Page and Plant as part of "In the Evening", it was to be played live on the 1980 US tour.
"I'm Gonna Crawl"

Coda
"Poor Tom"
"Walter's Walk"
Ozone Baby"
"Darlene"
"Bonzo's Montreux"
"Wearing and Tearing"
"Baby Come On Home"
"Hey Hey What Can I Do"

Not played separately, but included in other tracks
"The Lemon Song"
"The Crunge"

2007 reunion - songs played live for the fist time at that show.
"Good Times Bad Times" - had only been played in full a couple of times before, and then within a medley.
"Ramble On"
"For Your Life"

Right I am going back to having a life, or at least looking after my daughter for the day.

Interesting list. I remember seeing Page and Plant playing "Wearing & Tearing" at Knebworth in 1990.

Cool,

Let us know how it goes.

Take some pics if you can?

I dont like that place though,

Tangerine Dream sounded rubbish there a few years ago.

That said, it just might of been the fault of there music and computers.

Enjoy the gig.

Underrated only by its omission from their "regular" albums, but Hey, Hey, What Can I Do is a fave.

Also Gallows Pole is an amazing tune.

Did you know Sandy Denny was once a member of St Winifred's School Choir?

And Bob Holness (of Blockbusters fame) played the sax solo on "Baker Street"?

Posted on: 11 July 2012 by Gale 401

Noogle,

Raphael Ravenscroft played the sax on Baker Street.
