Assuming that when you take digital optical from the DVD5 into the same AV2 optical input, all works fine, then I'd assume there is a problem with the HTPC optical output. Perhaps you need to go into the HTPC setup menu and either switch on the optical output or ensure it's outputting a data stream compatible with the AV2. You may have to disable digital on HDMI to enable on optical s/pdif. The AV2 will take either PCM stereo or a multichannel bitstream but may not work if the HTPC is only outputting very high res PCM over 96Khz sampling. If there's an option to limit the digital output to say, 24bit 48kHz then try that to see whether that works OK.

You probably need to look at the sound setting on the HTPC and tell it not to send sound down the hdmi but the optical instead.
I will have a look when I get home as I had to do this.
