DVD5 replacement, am I kidding myself

Posted by: Flojoe on 17 July 2012

When I bought my DVD5 it was because of the sound quality. Others at the time had what I thought to be a slightly better picture, but I wanted the best sound quality for my DVD concerts. Now I am thinking of upgrading to HD, but is there a HD DVD player out there that can either match or exceed the DVD5 in terms of sound quality ?

Being an ex-owner of the DVD5 ....

I repaced it for video use with an Oppo 83SE.  Bluray, and as for DVD, well picture at least as good as the DVD5, and sound quality with Dolby Digital and ordinary DTS on a par.  As a CD player the Dvd5 was still better, IMO.

You're not necessarily kidding yourself. The audio standard for BluRay is a step up from the pretty nasty compression used in DVDs. So even though the hardware might not be Naim-standard, you might still be ahead. We find the Blu-ray PCM into our SuperNait to be pretty impressive.

I've got the pioneer Blu Ray BDP-LX08 which had pretty good sound quality for blu ray

from it's own analogue out. However it has been a transformation to connect it to my NDAC via

optical.   Stunning.

I was worried at first about any latency of audio the NDAC might introduce but I have found it to

be of negligible proportion.    I am also finding it worthwhile to get a decent Toslink cable to the NDAC.  The QED graphite has been excellent but I think it could go further still.

Recently I tried a  wireworld supernova between my mac mini and the NDAC and it's brilliant. Not sure how it can be given an optical signal but it is and that's what matters.   Will probably connect blu ray to NDAC with another one soon.

So I think you can move on from DVD without worry that fab sound can be had.
