Mac users Question, AIFF or WAV?

Posted by: AntonD on 23 July 2012

Hi All

I'm interested to know what do the Mac users out there typically use as a file format?

My current setup is ND5xs, iMac, all cd's ripped to AIFF in iTunes and everything is wired from a connection point of view. I'm currently using the internal HD for storage.

I also have several studio masters in FLAC that I have converted to AIFF and then imported to iTunes. I do like the look/feel of iTunes as an organiser, etc... but this is not essential going forward. I also like how n-stream interacts with the iTunes dB.

I will admit that I am loving the sound so no complaints there.

I notice many discussions on the forum regarding FLAC vs AIFF but not this particular question. Sorry if this has been answered in a previous post. I am new to all this!

Many thanks in advance. Anton

Stick with AIFF - works just as well as WAV with the Naim players.

Thanks James. Are you also using iTunes?

Yep. iTunes on a headless mac mini using Playback as the UPnP server.

I use AIFF, Headless Mac Mini, into Naim DAC, iTunes and Bit Perfect Controlled from iPad or iPhone using Apple remote. One bonus is that when I want to load up my iPhone for going out and about I don't have to convert the files.

If I want to play music via Airplay I have to disable Bit Perfect first though. Although this is not a big problem.

+1 ... although I use ALAC just because I'm weird.

I like Playback, but have been trying Minim because that is the kind of Guy I am

Though I'll probably use the Vortexbox with the KDS if I go that way.
