Woman Vocals - suggestions

Posted by: Iver van de Zand on 24 July 2012

Dear forummembers,

I could use some help with suggestions for a certain type of music I like. My interest goes to Woman Vocals especially in the genres of Folk, Jazz and Easy Listening. I try to follow some music magazines but this type of music is not always des ribed or reviewed. Any of you have any suggestions on top of below list of musicians I really like:

Eva Cassidy - Sara K. - Holly Cole - Cassandra Wilson - Jacintha - Diana Krall - Caroll Kid - Chie Ayado - Stacey Kent - Mathilde Santing - Patricia Kaas - Carla Lother - Rebecca Pidgeon

Thanks for the elp,

Iver

Also this lady has done some brilliant work over the years.

This is a great album to start with and it has the late Great Chris Jones playing on it.

Top Quality CD & Vinyl pressings also.

Yes its the same Chris Jones.

Born 1958

He died in 2005

Because of these being so cheap in the army.

He was a wonderful classical guitar player as well as the blues.

Oh! Thank you R.J. Reynolds...

Thank you Stu, I didn't realize he passed away quite a while ago. There's another Chris Jones (whose music I don't know) who's a bluegrass player apparently, and Rovi seems to be mixing up the two as well.

Really surprised to see only passing mention to the greatest singer songwriter of all time - Joni Mitchell. Everyone a classic. Also would suggest Carole king , gretchen peters, Kathleen Edwards, alana levandonski, Laura Viers, also check out Alabama shakes - the lead singer is Janis Joplin reborn Barry

I did mention Sandy Denny - what do you want to know about her?

Why Sandy has this accolade is because her songs are so genuine they could be folk songs that have existed for 100s of years. And Sandy did not sing from experience or about herself. She invented characters and stories and set them to music in a way that is unequalled. Imagination and gift for lyrical perfection. Here is a solo cut of Autopsy, which she performed with the Fairport Convention on Unhalfbricking.

What cannot be overlooked is that in 1969 ... Sandy inspired a complete change in popular music as Fairport released a trio of magnificent LPs, only to surpass this achievement herself with the release of her solo album Sandy: one of the most beautiful and moving recordings ever created.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Roberta Flack.  Try First Take.  Don't buy it for the recording though - buy it for the voice and the music.

Brilliant recommendations by users on this thread - quite a few artists I'd never heard of before. Only trouble is my Amazon basket is now full!

The Staves - Dead & Born & Grown is recommended on it's 22 Oct release (produced by Ethan & Glyn Johns) - http://www.thestaves.com/home.htm

Videos for your consideration - http://www.youtube.com/user/thestaves

They have already supported Bon Iver on his US tour and will be again on the Bon Iver Euro tour this autumn. I will be seeing the girls for the 2nd time this year in November. One of the most uplifting groups I have seen and highly recommended if you want to smile in wonder at a gig for a change.

Nobody has mentioned Stephanie Lynn Nicks. Her early post Mac albums are excellent, Bella Donna and Wild heart. Especially her collaborations with Tom Petty
