Woman Vocals - suggestions

Posted by: Iver van de Zand on 24 July 2012

Dear forummembers,

I could use some help with suggestions for a certain type of music I like. My interest goes to Woman Vocals especially in the genres of Folk, Jazz and Easy Listening. I try to follow some music magazines but this type of music is not always des ribed or reviewed. Any of you have any suggestions on top of below list of musicians I really like:

Eva Cassidy - Sara K. - Holly Cole - Cassandra Wilson - Jacintha - Diana Krall - Caroll Kid - Chie Ayado - Stacey Kent - Mathilde Santing - Patricia Kaas - Carla Lother - Rebecca Pidgeon

Thanks for the elp,

Iver

All of her three studio albums are very well recorded and will sound superb on your system. A live recording of one of her concerts "Live at the Olympia" is out on DVD, worth buying to extract the audio stream or otherwise you'll find it on Spotify.

Beautiful voice, good lyrics, hope you enjoy her music

CD ripping is finally completed and I was looking for inspiration for my next visit to Amazon.  So a big thank you to Iver for starting this topic and to the many contributors who have made it so interesting.   I have only got half way down the first page and have enough for the first order which includes: Patty Griffin, Dar Williams, Beth Neilsen Chapman, Sandy Denny and Sarah Jarosz.  I have also added Sofia Jannok (Swedish Sami singer) to the list courtesy of either Radio Paradise or BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction. So much music, so little time.

Posted in a separate thread, too. Check it out.

I like the girl band Electrelane and they posted on Facebook that their La Route du Rock concert from last summer can be streamed on this French website:  http://welovegirls.liveweb.arte.tv/fr/index.html

In the context of this thread, I think the ARTE Live Web fits the bill, with the bonus of 'live' performances. Lots to try and maybe enjoy.

I forgot about the wonderful Stina Nordenstam.  Start with 'She Closed her Eyes' and work from there. 'This is Stina Nordenstam' is one of the best sounding cd's I've ever heard. G

Don't forget Norah Jones!

I like all of her albums but her debut Come Away With Me is a classic. I use it as a show off CD as it sounds like she is sat right in front of me when she sings. The songs are great as is the production. She has a beautiful, innocent, smooth voice although the lyrics tell you she's not as innocent as she sounds.

Hi Guys, I keep on saying "thank you" for the continuous replies and suggestions. In the meanwhile I bought quite a lot of what is listed here and enjoying it every minute !!!!!

@Gale: the Sara K - Chris Jones album from Stockfish finally arrived and it is superb. Thanks for suggesting.

May I also suggest Jen Chapin - Revisions with aal Stevie Wonder covers. AT the latest show in Belgium, Naim distributor Latham used this album with demos and I can really recommend it in the genre Women Vocals. She has a very authentic sound for some reason different than any other. Highly recommended:

Kate Walsh "Peppermint Radio" well worth a listen. She's from the Essex coast and usually writes her own material, but this covers album is a real treat. Martin (mofaq)

I like Jewel Kilcher, especially the first two albums. Heartfelt lyrics, simple but effective guitar and piano. Saw her several years ago in concert and she was fantastic. Great songs and vocals and backed by a tight band. And the way her hips wriggled whilst wearing tight leather trousers... Voted 92nd sexiest woman out of 102 by Stuff magazine. What isn't there to like? But I digress. Sigh. Don't think much of her poetry though.

Take a listen to Youn Sun Nah - CD: Same Girl. Very interesting. She sings with her soul...

Someone on the forum recommended this album, so I took a chance and bought it -

It's become one of my favourite albums. Lauren's a great singer, all the songs are lovely, and the recording's a real peach!

I thank you for that Guido.

I have mastered the art of doing that on most fora, but here it eludes me and I simply cannot be bothered to learn yet another way..

Anyways - DCD are well worth the effort afaic, and this track, live last Friday makes a memory that will live with me forever.

From the first dark double drum hit to the final  - long, fading note the audience were completely transfixed, with total silence.

Far too rare in this age where it's the norm to natter all the way through a concert and show zero respect to anyone or the group.

Steve,

Brilliant choice.

I love Dead Can Dance and would have loved to have been at the RAH concert.

I have all there albums on quality 180g vinyl, box sets one and two.

The latest album has never been put in my LP rack since the day it came through the door.

It just gets played to much.

Stu.

I'm amazed that only one other person seems to have mentioned Ella Fitzgerald: if you want a personification of how to sing the sort of things you're after then she was it.  One of those great musicians who always brings the right thing, in the right place, at the right time, knowing very well that just because you can sing scat across several octaves doesn't mean you always should...

You can't really miss.  There's a huge pile of classics and they're all marvellous.

Just been listening to a sampler cd, as recommended on another thread. The cd is silver disc, 25 years of ace.

On the cd is a track called loving arms by a lady called Millie Jackson. Not heard of her before but she has a lovely voice, worth checking out

Check out Maeve O'Boyle "All My Sins", available from Linn in most formats including HD download, sounds really good thro' NDX/XPS-2. There is also an acoustic EP of some of the tracks
