Woman Vocals - suggestions

Posted by: Iver van de Zand on 24 July 2012

Dear forummembers,

I could use some help with suggestions for a certain type of music I like. My interest goes to Woman Vocals especially in the genres of Folk, Jazz and Easy Listening. I try to follow some music magazines but this type of music is not always des ribed or reviewed. Any of you have any suggestions on top of below list of musicians I really like:

Eva Cassidy - Sara K. - Holly Cole - Cassandra Wilson - Jacintha - Diana Krall - Caroll Kid - Chie Ayado - Stacey Kent - Mathilde Santing - Patricia Kaas - Carla Lother - Rebecca Pidgeon

Thanks for the elp,

Iver

Never heard of her before but thx great stuff.

A neighbour of ours. Great voice and technical ability. Personally I find her music, whilst technically great, a little too "safe"; but we listen to it quite a bit.

I would recommend her "Wintersong" album of Christmas music: Christmas music how it should be done. We play that a lot in December and find it sets wonderfully romantic mood for the holiday season. "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" is also great. You really can't go wrong, though (see "safe" comment above).

She sponsors an important music school for children. Her philosophy is that musical training complements and assist in other areas of intellectual and social development (I'm paraphrasing a lot, here). http://www.sarahschoolofmusic.com/

She's considered a bit of a national treasure, actually.

If you can put your hands on "Freedom Sessions", you will hear some of the early Sarah McClachan, very nice, very cool with a touch of grunt, not as safe as the later albums. It is my favorite.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it.

Edit: Found it on Amazon. Looks very interesting. Cheap, too. Thanks again.

If you like your female vocals with  a rock edge, she is superb.

Yes she is. We have some of her stuff with Joe Bonanmassa. Excellent.

Sandy Dillon, probably not what you had in mind though. The first three albums are somewhere between Waits and Beefheart.

Already mentioned but well worth repetition: Neko Case. Brilliant voice, funny and touching lyrics. Neko's music is commonly called as an alternative country, but it could be americana as well. Another already mentioned singer is Emily Baker. I completely fell in love during The Revival Tour 2013.

Have you come across a podcast called Daves Lounge?
He features some great female artists. I have been introduced to many new ones via it.

Aside of the obvious choices, I'd urge people to investigate these ...

Aimee Mann - especially Lost In Space

Maeve Kelly - Irish born singer now based in Germany

Patty Griffin - especially 1000 Kisses & Impossible Dream

Beth Jeans Horton - more indie but very good - Yours Truly Cellophane Nose

Serafina Steer - The Moths Are Real

Not read every page but not seen any mention of

Joan Armatrading

Jonette Napolitano (from the band Concrete Blonde) 'Joey' is one of my favourite all time songs, as is 'Tomorrow Wendy'

A new one to add to the list is the lead vocalist from London Grammar.  A relatively new band on the UK scene, very haunting vocalist.

After seeing Gill Sandell last night, I recommend her 2nd album, Light The Boats. Gill has really developed her songwriting skills & wonderful vocal arrangements.

I agree, perhaps not seen as very cool but a voice to die for.

Just a couple of gems. Heartbreaking voice.

I think you'd like Madeline Peyroux in the Jazzy context.

Sophie Zelmani has a superb album:  Time to Kill

The softer side of Goldfrapp is worth investigation, then there is Mazzy Star, just sublime.

A favourite album of mine and one never filed away is Trinity Sessions by Cowboy Junkies, hauntingly beautiful and nothing like it since.

There's a few to look into.

Regards,

Mark

Hey forummembers,

can't say enough how much all the feedback is appreciated ! I check every suggestion on Spotify: listen to a few tracks and if I like the music, I search the web how I can purchase an album. Another great, and new (!), source of information for suggestions on Woman Vocals is btw nStream !! When I tap the album-info button in nStream, there is often a chapter on "similar" albums. This gives very good results I believe.

To manage all my music, I use MediaMonkey and I built a complete system of rating albums and songs, both on music-content and sound-quality. A lot of work, but more or less a hobby itself:-). Still figuring out a way how I could use my rating system in nStream to make "intelligent" filters. for the moment I use alternate drll-paths with Assett.

Anyway, thought to add 3 suggestions from BeNeLux area:

- Trijntje Oosterhuis: especially her album on Burt Bacharch songs. English lyrics

- Ilse De Lange: mix of country/folk. Marvellous voice. English lyrics

- Axelle Red. Pop/SingerSongwriter, very warm voice. French and partially english lyrics

cheers,

Iver

Hi Iver,

A long time since my previous posting, so maybe a few additions (I quickly perused the thread, hope these are not duplicates):

  • Lisa Hannigan, Passenger: a truly brilliant album from a Damien Rice and Joe Henry collaborator; excerpt: Home
  • Marie Modiano, Outland: yes, the daughter of the writer Patrick Modiano, married to the talented Peter Von Poehl, a sensual alto voice; excerpt: Searching for Pearl
  • The Magnetic North, Orkney: Symphony to the Magnetic North: not woman vocal exclusively, but a beautiful ambient album; excerpt: Bay of Skaill
  • Cécile McLorin Salvant, WomanChild: a new jazz vocalist, truly impressive (available as hi-res); excerpt I Didn't Know What Time It Was
  • Catherine Russel, Strictly Romancin': jazz blues (available as hi-res); excerpt: Under the Spell of the Blues
  • Paul Motian, The Windmills of Your Mind: no, Paul Motian is still not a woman, but this all about Petra Haden -- daughter of the great Charlie Haden -- for a delicious album of standards covers (available as hi-res); excerpt: I Love You Porgy
  • Emily Jane White, Ode to Sentience: wonderful dark country-folk (available as hi-res); excerpt: The Cliff
  • Lou Doillon, Places: the actress, daughter of Jane Birkin, a half-broken alto, a moving first album in english; excerpt: I.C.U.
  • As we moved from the original enquiry for easy-listening jazz a long time ago, may I open the proverbial Pandora's Box with a (melodic -- fear not) metal suggestion ?
Here comes: Within Temptation, Mother Earth; come on, Iver, you know them -- and her, Sharon den Adel --, they're dutch; excerpt: Deceiver of Fools
  • Now that the box is open, this one shall not be avoided: The Gathering, If_then_else; they're dutch too, and the lead singer is of course Anekke van Giersbergen; excerpt: Amity

Well, that's it for now. Good luck Iver, and enjoy !

Hey Maurice,

Hi Iver,

This has been a fabulous thread that has opened the eyes of everyone who reads it and contributes.

I'm a big fan of Anneke van Giersbergen and looking forward to seeing her at the Jazz Café, Camden, London on Saturday week. Thanks to Maurice for recognising Anneke's talent.

Two more recent voices that I have enjoyed have been Imany (France) and Valerie Joyce

I've just reaslised that Tina Dico hasn't been mentioned.

I came across her a few months ago. She has sung with Zero7. "Home" features her singing and this album has a more acoustic version:

Thanks Denis, great link.

(Sorry Iver for the metal digression. I'll let others recommend Lacuna Coil / Nightwish / Epica / Evanescence / Therion / etc. And then, some might point you to the extreme metal female singers...)

Posted on: 10 October 2013 by m0omo0

Oh.. but wait... I may have missed them when reviewing the thread, but did we really forget the Muses ?? Just in case, a pair of stunning solo albums:

  • Kristin Hersh, Hips and Makers; fasten your seat belt and forget the easy in listening, but so rewarding in the end; excerpt: Your Ghost
  • Tanya Donelly, Beautysleep; her half-sister, previously partner in crime in The Throwing Muses, a incredibly moving album; excerpt: The Storm

... and how can we forget one of the greatest Mademoiselles ever recorded:
