NDS with 2x 555PS-DR
Posted by: Michael Kramp on 26 July 2012
The Sound is near to my 555CD with 2x 556PS (which are not updated now to DR)
Fantastic!
Thanks to NAIM engineers for that great work!
Congratulations, Michael!
Was it an offprint or did you put a power line on your 555PS and call it a 556PS ?
How is NDS different from CD555?
btw -- what's the rest of your system?
Congratulations Michael - an early adoptor of the top of the line streaming solution from Naim. I look forward to hearing more over time, especially how much extra the 2nd 555PS brings to the show. I have a 555PS DR on my DAC, and plan to get an NDS in a few months so interested in hints and tips to get the best performance.
Thanks.
"Near" not better?? even with non-DR on the CDS555??

Congratulations and all the best with it.
I appreciate that it is hard to tear yourself away but I'm sure we'd all very much appreciate you sharing more of your NDS experience. I would.
two seperate high cost psu to run a unit that just needs milliamps is silly. again the naims just like lots of boxes on the rack, the output is still from a 16 bit cd

congratulations michael. 2x555PS-DR must be awesome and of course we all make our own decisions what is best for us ... if i could afford it, i would also have 2x555PS, let alone DR... if it enhanced enjoyment of music in the home. too many boxes is an inconvenience that i chose to live with. i dont understand the 'milliamps' point.

Don't feed the troll Ken.
I for one an slightly jealous of the OP's new source. I would buy exactly that combo without any question if I had the spare fundage to do so!

Ooops, Thanks Julian, i was getting drawn in there...

Shouldn't a NDS with 2x555ps DR be better than a 555CDP with 2x555ps NON DR, I ask myself ? Peter
Different strokes Peter!
I have today just taken delivery of my NDS and 555ps dr. I part exchanged a lot of other bits including my CDS3, NDX and was going to px my original 555 non dr ps.
I made the mistake of listening to the NDS with the new 555ps and my old one.
The addition of the second 555ps made a much bigger difference than I thought it would.
With my dealer's agreement my older 555ps is now staying for a bit longer while I decide if I can buy a second dr 555ps.
I don't understand why people dismiss such things without listening although I agree it's expensive.
I have not heard a 555cd player in my home but the NDS with single 555ps performs better than my CDS3/555ps and now with two 555 ps supplies it is even better.
The new Nstream apps works much better with the new NDS firmware and allows playlists.
So far I am really impressed and expect it to sound even better in a few weeks once it all burns in.

Hi Graham,
where did you put the "old" 555PS and the new dr one ? feeding digital or analogue on the NDS ?
All the best.
Stefano
Music to my ears, Michael ! Have fun Peter
6 out of 100 well done
Michael, is it in musical terms or in hi-fi terms?
Michael -- wow for a long list!
But I would lie if I say I got anything clear from it
Did you audition NDS with Gryphon Colloseum + Gryphon Atlantis?
I thought Colloseum is poweramp only
Hi Graham,
where did you put the "old" 555PS and the new dr one ? feeding digital or analogue on the NDS ?
Hi Stefano - my non dr 555ps went on the digital side with the new dr supply powering the analogue circuits. Jason from Naim reckoned this was the best option as we are more sensitive to changes on the analogue side.
Jason still feels the dr version will bring further noticeable improvements to the digital side so is recommending that I go for one. All I can say is that the music is more natural, more spacious, more detailed and more involving in a way I did not think would happen by using a second power supply.
Yes the NDS and two 555dr power supplies is extremely expensive but It is possible to get there in stages rather than having to buy everything in one go.
The NDS is the current "reference" player so it is bound to be expensive. However, the NDS with a single 555 dr ps is still cheaper than the 555cd player/555 dr ps. It is not much more expensive with two 555 power supplies than the 555cd player with a single 555ps.
I like the convenience of streaming and can also use the NDS for my Sky and Bluray playback as well as for internet radio should I so choose. Sound quality when streaming is stunning even with one 555 but with two it is the icing on the cake.

Interesting... when I had my NDX-nDac-555PS, even if general consensus was to put the 555PS on the nDac, therefore analogue, I preferred it on the NDX as that "cleaner" digital feed made quite a difference for me with a more spacious and involving sound.
When I will eventually get a 555PS dr I will be curious to try out both combinations and see if my previous experience still holds... for me.
Yes, the NDS is truly a great piece of kit and gives so much more than than the NDX-nDac-555PS combo.
Michael Kramp.. Fascinated to read that. I am the same!!! My hearing goes the same way.. I can sometimes hear every single little sound... Or small rodent rustling .. Watch ticking. Tap dripping from a distance... I have had my hearing checked and all I have been told is I have better than average frequency response, with no dips or fade common with people my age. It sometimes drives me mad.. Especially at night!... And I have to get up and play some music....
I also suffer from seeing certain lights flicker, and when I used to work in an office I hadtto have a desk by a window, as I could see fluorescent lights and CRT screens flicker away and used to give me headaches... I don't know if it's related......
Graham... I think you ate right to criticise people dismissing multiple seperate powersupllies.
I currently run NDX and NDAC / 555PS (with a lot of tweaks) Having two seperate powersupplies feeding the NDAC transforms that combo into one of the best combos I have *yet heard* from Naim.
The ndac sings by separating the digital and analogue powersupplies out.
This gives a massive boost to performance. I would expect the same with the NDS. A single powersupply would be good, two powersupplies would be better. Assuming you have good isolation, cable dressing and RF filtering I am expecting the NDS to only better a NDAC / 555PS when powered by two powersupplies. So far my auditions on other systems might have demonstrated this for my ears, but I want to wait to audition at home on my system/speakers for an extended period before I post my findings here.
Hi Simon, I get what you are saying about the Naim DAC and agree that adding a 555PS lifts the performance into a different league however I'm struggling to understand how 2 555PS' can be such a material improvement. Perhaps I don't want to beleive.... If I beleive, I have to upgrade.... When will it all end....
If I understand correctly, the 555PS uses separate windings, rectifiers, caps and regs for the digital supply so already does a pretty good job when it comes to isolation? When adding an external supply to the DAC you are providing a much stiffer, quieter supply than the internal one so the analogue sections benefit hugely. Are you suggesting that despite of the good internal isolation in the 555PS, the shared transformer could be coupling RF noise transmitted back through the digital supply into the analogue section?
Thanks.
