NDX Appreciation Thread!

Posted by: SKDriver on 02 August 2012

I have been reading the 'NDS Appeciation Thread' with some interest, and if I am honest with myself, a little envy every now and then.  To those of you investing in this aspirational piece of hardware, enjoy...

However I had an epiphany whilst listening to my system a few days ago.  My (bare) NDX has an ability to get me dancing, playing air-guitar and singing like a lunatic on occasion (not pretty!); in other words I enjoy the music.  So I have to ask myself just want do I want from the hi-fi?

As much as I love new kit and would dearly love a top-flight Naim system, there is no way I can justify to myself, or more importantly my wife, the necessary funds to upgrade to an NDS, plus XPS2 (minimum!).  And then there is the necessary amp upgrades to fully appreciate it and make it worthwhile.  So whilst I may be able to sneak a HiCap (DR of course!) onto the 202, I think thats it for me.  Stick.

So who is with me?  BIG up to the NDX.  Fantastic bit of kit that makes music an enjoyable event!

SKD OUT...

With you on that one. I was fortunate enough to hear an NDS with 2 x 555 PS yesterday and it is a knockout combination, gets right into the music. However, upon firing up my NDX when I got home and playing some well loved tracks, I came over all cosy. To many, this is just as aspirational a bit of kit as an NDS and significantly more achievable whilst still capable of some stunning quality!

Enjoy what you have at any level is my view, it's the appreciation of the music that counts.

It's a superb piece of kit.  I run mine with a DAC plus a TPXPS.  Each addition has made significant improvements.  There's no doubt that a DAC2 will be available at some point in the future and there are plenty of non-dr XPS available on the used market.  Unless you are running a big active system the NDX might just be the only streamer you need.  Yes I'll concede that the NDS is better but I heard it with a 552 and 3 x 500s into a pair of Ovator 600s - a system very few of us are ever likely to own.

That sounds like the system at Naim HQ? Although I'm sure it's not the only one in the world. If I had enough money and the will to spend it on equipment I still wouldn't be able to fit the stacks in the space available. It did sound a bit tasty though

Before getting the NDS home I thought the star of the streamer range was the NDX - with XPS2 IIRC. Yes, the NDS was worth the reach for me, but in terms of bang for buck the X has got a whole lot going for it.
